GOP Senator Shoots Down Trump’s Call for National Elections Takeover

Senator Tim Sheehy (R-MT) publicly undercut President Donald Trump’s push to federalize America’s elections on Thursday, flatly warning he did not support the idea, which would require a constitutional amendment.

The proposal, first floated by the president on Tuesday in a podcast interview with Dan Bongino, his former FBI deputy director, came alongside Trump’s familiar unsubstantiated claims that he won states where he was officially defeated in past presidential elections, which he again branded “crooked.” The president said Republicans should “take over the voting” in at least 15 jurisdictions.

Trump repeated the claim on Wednesday night in an interview with NBC Nightly News host Tom Llamas, baselessly arguing many elections across the country were “extremely corrupt” and once again discussing “federal controls.”

During an interview with Sheehy on Thursday morning, CNN anchor Pamela Brown rolled back the clip and pressed the Republican on the matter.

“Yes or no, Senator, do you support elections becoming federalized, contrary to what the constitution says?” Brown asked.

“No, that’s a constitutional amendment and elections are placed at the state level for a reason,” Sheehy replied.

He continued: “I do strongly believe in voter ID, I think that’s absolutely the right answer. Unfortunately, as you know, to implement that federally would require basically amending the Constitution, which is, you know, the bar for that is very high from state legislatures to super-majorities in Congress. In our partisan age, it’s highly unlikely that happens as much as I wish it would.”

“So I think we have to do everything we can to ensure election security at the federal level and obviously work with states to make sure it’s happening at the state level as well,” he added.

Well, if the issue concerns federal elections, Trump’s idea is indeed valid.

Talk about mixed apples with oranges.

It is already a violation of federal statutes to allow non-citizens to vote. The issue arises when local offices are on the same ballot as federal offices.

Because the RINOs won’t stop the fraudulent elections, Trump will need to invoke the Insurrection Act at midnight Nov. 4th to save the republic.

Why do we even bother with elections?

Federal elections should be federalized.

For years the dems had no problem issuing consent decrees to interfere with state and local elections when they thought it gave them an advantage.

State and locals who refuse to meet basic federal voting guidelines and standards should have their votes ignored as they can’t be verified as valid.

Trump should be calling for expulsion of WA, MN, and other states that refused to honor Trump’s request for voter registration rolls as provided by law. Time to remove the Congressional insurrectionists from Congress until they can pass election audits.

And there you go. It’s people like this that keep Thune from bringing the bill up for a vote.

The fear of that occurring at the Special Session on Jan6 is likely what prompted the riot and Pelosi's fire alarm. The proof was on the table for all to see.

The constitution is very clear. Elections are controlled by the states.

Absolutely...In fact...I think The Florida Supreme Court made a decision...Gore/Bush....and it was like....Wait...This is a Federal Election...your ruling can only be for Florida.

I'll look it up...it was a big deal.

This supports the Federal Judges ruling for the entire country.

That’s what I was thinking.

I don’t see why the federal government cannot control elections or require voter ID and proof of citizenship for federal offices.

“The constitution is very clear. Elections are controlled by the states.”

It is quite clear indeed.

Article I
Section 4 Congress
Clause 1 Elections Clause
“The Times, Places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof;

but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations.”

The reason we have the problems we do is because we have centralized too much...in elections with the FEC/HAVA Federal Elections Commission/Help America Vote Act.

To double down on our mistake makes no sense. That’s like putting money on the Chicago Bears for the 2026 Super Bowl.

> The constitution is very clear. Elections are controlled by the states.

How then can a Federal Judge order certain precincts to stay open for voting past their State scheduled closing times?

It does when a party uses one part of the Constitution to commit Sedition

Enabling non-citizens to vote is committing Sedition against the Union.
