The Rangueil Accident and Emergency unit in Toulouse was evacuated after doctors found “an eight-inch-long live World War I artillery shell in…[a man’s] rectum,” according to the Daily Mail.
The Daily Mail quoted “an investigating source” who indicated that the patient, a 24-year-old man, “…was in a state of extreme discomfort, having inserted a large object up his rectum.”
Because the artillery shell was not inert, “bomb disposal experts” were called in, as was the fire brigade.
The New York Post noted that “a security perimeter” was set around the medical facility while the artillery shell was being handled.

Hope he didn’t have Taco Bell for lunch.
You could probably print money with some of rainbow people of the veteran community.
I do have some mold making/tooling experience, but it was helping make molds for fiberglass boat doors.
Oh my, that is terrifying. I can’t wrap my head around doing something like this.
A. million-to-one shot, doctor. A million-to-one.
A game of Pictionary that got out of control.
It isn’t even squiggly and fuzzy like a gerbil.
POW!
“Alright! Who’s the wise guy that glued the firing pin to Pierre’s chair?”
The Daily Mail pointed out, “There was no initial explanation as to why the shell ended up in the man’s body, but local media speculated that it might have had something to do with his social life.”

“Impossible!”
“What is it, Doctor?”
“Look at the x-ray!”
“Is that a cannon up there?”
Should have just detonated it in place, rather than risk injury to a bomb squad technician.
Seriously, don’t they have those “special” shops in Talouse for those things? The ER staff will have a lot of party and bar stories to tell for the rest of their lives!
The face of warfare changed in the 20th century when it was learned that rear areas were not as safe and protected as they had been assumed to be in previous centuries.
Obviously some WWI munitions are still have the potential to wreak havoc in rear areas.
Was it a 155 mm shell?
I’ve heard from a surgery nurse that there are some real oddities found in odd places. A common one is shot glasses! Mental illness. You really can’t imagine just how crazy some people can be.
Was it a rim fire?
I bet that none of the people who manufactured, ordered, shipped or handled the device in WWI ever imagined where it would show up in 2026.
Did the patient say “Read the card, read the card”?
I used to know a couple who worked in an ER in Denver. They said they kept a list.
