New York City (NYC) Mayor Zohran Mamdani cast blame on former NYC Mayor Eric Adams for the city’s $12 billion deficit budget, stating that the city is facing a “serious fiscal crisis.”
During a press conference on Wednesday, Mamdani accused Adams of underbudgeting important services that NYC residents “rely on every single day,” while “quietly leaving behind enormous gaps for the future.” Mamdani also accused former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) of extracting NYC’s “resources” and using the city’s revenues to “address state level holes, while withholding from the city what it was owed.”
“There is a massive fiscal deficit in our city’s budget to the tune of at least $12 billon. We did not arrive at this place by accident. This crisis has a name, and a chief architect,” Mamdani said. “In the words of The Jackson 5, it’s as easy as ABC. This is the ‘Adams Budget Crisis.'”
Mamdani went on to explain that under what Adams described as the “best budget ever,” Adams “handed the next administration a poisoned chalice.” Mamdani accused Adams of having “systematically under-budgeted services that New Yorkers rely on every single day.”
During the press conference, a reporter pointed out that Mamdani was “describing this sort of fundamental relationship reset” between the city and the state. The reporter added that “it would take more than just” two tax increases “to achieve that,” and questioned if Mamdani was “expecting to ask for” more “in terms of long-term.”…….

Back in 2023 Adams warned that spending on illegals would blow a $12B hole in the budget by 2025.
At the time, then-State Assembly member Zohran Mamdani said Adams’ cost estimates were exaggerated and were right wing rhetoric.

Folks like this clown think there enough rich bleeding hearts out there ready to take one for the team. What he will learn is these folks are really good at protecting what is theirs. He will end up actually having to tax everyone , which of course will make NYC even more unaffordable and less attractive and then the spiral really begins.

An excellent point. What so much of marketing of politics these days is about fails at one significant thing. People walk away, and sometimes flee with entire companies.
Smith's notion of "invisible hands" operating in the marketplace seems so apt, and so unbelievable when Lefty Dems and RINOs wake up to ask, "where are they going?" "Walk away" is happening in cities and states and nations, as in churches and schools and in media where "where did they go" is now being replaced with expressions of contempt that "they" don't appreciate the drivel, incompetence and failure piling up.
As the old joke goes, "I hope they get what they wanted -- good and hard." NYC is in trouble its electorate invited in to overstay their time.
This is a fairly typical political playbook. A new administration does an investigation of the budget and finds that the city / state / country is in horrible fiscal shape. It gives the new administration a pass if the economy and government services remain in the toilet during the beginning of the new administration. Or, in Obama’s case, he blamed Bush for his entire first term.

This is a major dilemma for a socialist. How to provide free buses and free childcare, expand rent subsidies, government run grocery stores etc. Where will he get the money to make good on his campaign promises?
