Enormous freshwater reservoir discovered off the East Coast may be 20,000 years old and big enough to supply NYC for 800 years

A giant reservoir of "secret" fresh water off the East Coast that could potentially supply a city the size of New York City for 800 years may have formed during the last ice age, when the region was covered in glaciers, researchers say.

Preliminary analyses suggest the reservoir, which sits beneath the seafloor and appears to stretch from offshore New Jersey as far north as Maine, was locked in place under frigid conditions around 20,000 years ago, hinting that it formed in the last glacial period due, partly, to thick ice sheets.

Last summer, researchers went on an expedition to follow up on reports from the late 1960s and early 1970s of fresh water beneath the seafloor off the East Coast. "It was quite the project and sort of a lifelong dream," Brandon Dugan, the expedition's co-chief scientist and a professor of geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines, told Live Science.

This is more water of the coast of New England, so why should NYC get any? Trade water for ousting Mamdani!

NYC has plenty of fresh water from their Catskill Mountains reservoirs and gravity aqueducts, so they don’t need to drill for offshore fresh water.

It would be a completely different matter if this underground reservoir were found off the coast of Los Angeles.

There’s water under the vast oceans?

Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.

Desalination would be a solution cheaper than drilling way out to sea!

Kirkwood/Cohenski has 17 trillion gallons of water here in Jersey.

“Desalination would be a solution cheaper than drilling way out to sea!”

Correct, large-scale desalination costs NEXT TO NOTHING relative to the cost of ‘free’ water when you get it delivered to residences...maybe 10% more. So your average $50 water bill might be $55, but no more big-government crap (days you cannot water, cannot wash your car, etc.), at least with regard to water.

Of course it’s all dreaming, since we (the United States) no longer do big projects, but maybe China will...

There is no need to worry... 71% of the earth is water... There is approximately 326 million cubic miles of water on the planet and we have the tech to make all of it drinkable.

We will never run out of water.

“was locked in place under frigid conditions around 20,000 years ago”

It’s called the Laurentide ice sheet which formed the Great Lakes only 120 great grandmothers ago. You know, global warming caused the ice to form. /s

Do they even teach very basic geology in grade school these days? More s/

Perhaps it is time to trade that water for oil in Iran!

Within two decades, scientists will figure out a very cheap way to desalinate ocean water.

Even the Sahara Desert will be an oasis.

Forget the water there maybe a literal gold mine down there. Think I'll file a claim. Anyone want to invest?

How much per gallon does it cost to desalinate ocean water.

AI:
The cost to desalinate ocean water typically ranges from $0.0016 to $0.01 per gallon, depending on location, technology, scale, and energy costs. For example, Israelโ€™s Sorek Phase II plant achieved a record-low cost of $0.0016 per gallon, while other projects range up to $0.01 per gallon. Costs are heavily influenced by energy consumption, with reverse osmosis (RO) plants using 3โ€“4 kWh per cubic meter, and operational expenses (especially electricity) making up 40โ€“50% of total costs. Economies of scale, renewable energy integration, and technological advances have significantly reduced pricesโ€”by up to 45% over the past decadeโ€”making desalination increasingly cost-competitive, especially in water-scarce regions ...

While it cost a resident of NYC per gallon of water:

The average cost of tap water for NYC residents is approximately $0.00015 per gallon. This is based on an average residential water bill of about $5 per month for 7,480 gallons (100 cubic feet), making municipal tap water significantly cheaper than desalinated water.
