As described in Sean McMeekin’s To Overthrow the World: The Rise and Fall and Rise of Communism, where it has been adopted, communism has become politically dominant mostly at the point of a spear. In Russia and elsewhere, when Communism first took over the state, famine was an early result. By 1922, Lenin had to adopt a New Economic Policy (NEP), which allowed at least some limited access to market-driven commerce in order to suppress a possible counter-revolution. After Stalin’s death in 1953, Khruschev was appalled by the empty shelves in Soviet stores.
Shortly after McMeekin’s book got off the presses, New York City’s electorate propelled Zohran Mamdani to political prominence. The book’s epilogue did foreshadow such an event. New Yorkers have become so ignorant of history and economics that they just voted for a shrill advocate for state-imposed misery, while assuming that all kinds of free stuff will make their lives better. They will suffer, and the rest of us are hopefully going to become vaccinated against such folly.
Thanks to modern technology, old-fashioned ideologic communism has morphed into bare naked totalitarian control. Back in 2022, some of the Canadian truckers who dared to protest the government’s mandate that they be vaccinated against COVID had their bank accounts frozen. In 2023, dissident E.U. parliamentarian Nigel Farage had the same experience. This has been dubbed “debanking.” McMeekin traces this back to the Chinese Communist Party’s imposition of a social credit system, making one’s overall treatment dependent on his political acts and opinions.
The new point of the spear is the consolidated power of the modern state. Gone is the thin mask of idealism, concealing self-aggrandizement on behalf of the ruling elite. America’s useful idiots have been thoroughly programmed by union-thug teachers at government-run schools. This smacks of inevitability, but there’s

I expect New York’s experience will be a cautionary tale about the evil of communism and what happens if people are stupid enough to vote for evil.
Or they'll say he could have succeeded, but Trump undermined his plans.
Communism is very attractive in theory. Imagine no more greedy rich people exploiting the masses. Most people are not rich, so it is easy to get elected.
People who hate communism are those who have actually lived under communism for several years. There always shortages of necessities and life becomes constant hardships.
It only works when you have a lot of people convinced they're victims of the greedy rich people.
Maybe that's the definition of "the middle class." People who don't feel like victims of greedy rich people. People who know that however much you've got, there's always someone "richer."
I guess that's where the idea of "widely disseminated education" comes in. But we've got an education system that disseminates stupidity.
Big time.
Exactly.
It is not THAT simple, luckily some people are smart and see through it, even if they are poor.
But yes, communism is based on jealousy.
Common share of poverty!
It promises paradise on earth, but results in hell on earth!
Yes, communists are very skilled on blaming others on their bad policies.
E.g. Communists are in charge of Cuba for like 70 years.
the country is in total despair, yet they still fight for better future and blame US capitalists.
If communism were such a great idea, Cuba, by now, would be paradise on Earth, regardless what US has been doing!
Refugees from US would try to get to Cuba by millions!
if you get upset because someone has more than you
you will be miserable your entire life
With all due respect, Communism is not at all attractive to anyone who wants to be a self determining individual instead of a drone in a bee hive.
The new point of the spear is the consolidated power of the modern state.
That has been the goal of the democrats from day one it’s why the party was formed.
They are nearing it more then most people think.
Say good night comrades it’s your last sleep.
marxist mamdani cannot steal private property
but he can destroy its value
so his fellow travelers can buy for a song
what will that do to the tax base?
Community Opportunity to Purchase Act (COPA), passed by the New York City Council on December 18, 2025, grants qualified nonprofit entities (NGOs) a first right of first refusal to purchase certain multifamily buildings in NYC.
HAHA that is the exact problem. Majority of people are NOT rich, they are either lazy or dumb. They are jealous of people richer than them, and vote for free stuff& taxing the rich. I had only $25 in my name at one point, now a millionaire through sheer hard work and living within my means. I had 2 things going for me, good IQ and desire to work long hours (70/hours per week for 15 years before age 40). Jealousy is one of the strongest trait.
People LOVE socialism. They think they will get more than they put in. Socialism is a total Ponzi Scheme.
#8 Cuba trades with the rest of the world yet remains poor because they do not trade with one country called the United States....
Hmm... maybe it might be communism that is the problem.
They should try capitalism.
Exactly!
If communism were such a great idea, any kind of US restrictions would not matter a zilch.
After seventy years of their communist policies, they should be filthy rich and they should be very busy trying hard to stop illegals from US sneaking in!
Blaming US for Cuba’s problems is just a stupid excuse for total failure!
Jealousy is definitely a big, big problem, but it’s not just about how much one has. It’s how you got it. Liberals have no problem with LeBron James having multiple mansions and vacation homes. They have no problem with Oprah being filthy rich. What they despise is the success of people who were just like them, but who worked harder. They didn’t make the sacrifices or efforts, and resent anyone who got ahead of them by doing so.
