JUST IN: Controversial Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino Reassigned Out of Minneapolis
Mediaite ^ | January 26, 2026 | Jennifer Bowers Bahney

CNN reported Monday that controversial Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino will be leaving Minneapolis, where he has been overseeing operations and vehemently defending officers following the shooting death of 37-year-old Alex Pretti.

Anderson Cooper broke the news Monday afternoon, saying, “Sources tell CNN that top Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino and some of his agents are expected to leave Minneapolis tomorrow,” before tossing to reporter Priscilla Alvarez.

“This really is a major shift in strategy here by the Trump administration,” Alvarez began. “Recall, Gregory Bovino has been a key player in the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and became, in many ways, the public face of that crackdown across cities in the country. Most recently, of course, in Minneapolis.”

“We are now being told by sources that he is going to be departing Minneapolis with some of his Border Patrol agents tomorrow and going back to their respective sectors,” Alvarez said. “Now, we’re also told that part of this has been influenced by the frustrations within the administration over the handling and the public response of Saturday’s shooting.”

Earlier Monday, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hinted at Bovino’s reassignment, saying, “Mr. Bovino is a wonderful man and he’s a great professional. He is very much going to lead Customs and Border Patrol throughout and across the country. Mr. [Tom] Homan will be the main point of contact on the ground in Minneapolis.”

In addition to giving press conferences where he described his border patrol agents as the true “victims” in the incident with Pretti, Bovino spent the weekend sparring with lawmakers and journalists on social media.

After CNN’s Jake Tapper insinuated he was a liar, Bovino asked for proof, writing, “Then identify the lie, Jake. No one can seem to find this mysterious ‘lie’.”

Tapper was happy to oblige, posting reams of court documents where a judge wrote, ““Bovino admitted in his deposition that he lied multiple times.”

“Let me know if I can help with anything else,” Tapper wrote.

“Send in the army, put down the insurrectionists.”

************

Democrats were railing against insurrection before they supported it.

Some may think this makes Trump look weak. But on this one I believe Trump is playing chess not checkers.

MN is just one state. Meanwhile ICE is getting results not only in MN but throughout the nation. Trump is winning and in good shape for the midterms.

MN is trying to goad Trump into sending in troops. Not sure Trump is falling for it and is intentionally slowing this thing down so perhaps it burns itself out.

Sorry Trump likes fast and easy wins but hates hard problems to solve...just factual.

Your opinion is not factual. Just boringly CNN.

Methinks this is a preemptive move to keep things going when the Dems shut down the government this week over funding the Border Patrol.

Bovino nor any ICE agents will be able to work after the Dems cut off funding, but the military on the other hand ....

Franchise it and bring it to rural Texas. Texans are wimps at heart.

I thought ICE was fully funded? And even if it isn’t, the President can classify ICE operations as essential and keep them going.

If Trump caves on this they’ve won. Minneapolis is in rebellion.

“I thought ICE was fully funded?”

Per Fox News about 10 minutes ago, ICE is funded through 2029.

“Rotation of leadership prevents burnout”

Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino needs a working vacation in a low pressure zone. I read that arresting illegals in San Diego goes smoothly for ICE.

Gregory Bovino is a tough guy patriot, who is up to the job.

Until demonstrated otherwise I think this is Trump changing the “psychology of the table”. Bovino can now be moved on to another urban area with “illegal alien” problems say maybe NYC. I don’t see Homan being softer then Bovino. Tampon Tim can save a little face and claim a win. Tim has huge fraud legal problems in the very near future. He may be trying to cut a “deal”.

Before we claim we’re beaten and Trump caved this has to play out.

“If Trump caves on this they’ve won. Minneapolis is in rebellion.”

As a podcaster said earlier today, Walz is running the country now. (And he didn’t even have to win a national election to do it. Kamala must be jealous.)

Agree. Even if Homan can change the trajectory, it’s too late. Extreme measures were needed three weeks ago.

They have beaten down Trump.
