2026 Oscar Nominations
NYT ^ | 1/22/26 | Shivani Gonzalez and Kellina Moore

Posted on 01/22/2026 12:46:45 PM PST by Borges

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards were announced Thursday morning. Leading the pack was “Sinners,” with a record-breaking 16 nominations, including best picture, best director for Ryan Coogler and best actor for Michael B. Jordan. “One Battle After Another” received one nomination after another for a total of 13, also including best picture, best director for Paul Thomas Anderson and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Timothée Chalamet is in the running for best actor as well for “Marty Supreme,” which would make him one of the youngest best actor winners after Adrien Brody’s win for “The Pianist” in 2003. Also notable in the acting categories is “Sentimental Value,” with its entire main cast getting nods at four nominations: Renate Reinsve for best actress, Stellan Skarsgard for best supporting actor, and both Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for best supporting actress.

The ceremony will take place on March 15 and Conan O’Brien will be returning as the host. Below is the full list of nominees.

Frankenstein by Netflix was the best movie of the year.

But it’s not a Hollywood studio.

I’ve heard of two of those movies. Haven’t seen any of them. But I don’t matter, I’m not their target audience.

It was released in the theaters for a little while to qualify for the Oscars.

As expected, the insipid, out of date One Battle After Another cleaned up with nominations. I’d say that I was going to boycott the Oscars but I really can’t since I haven’t watched them in 20+ years.

Gone are the days that Hollywood would put out a bunch of decent movies each year.

OBAA is *about* out of date attitudes and people who hold them. It’s a send up.

Watched the trailer for “Sinners.” Now I know why I don’t go to the movies anymore.

A few more years they’ll be giving awards for “Best Ai created movie”. I wonder if we will have Ai created people whining about Trump like idiot Mark Ruffalo. “Waaaah! Deporting foreign criminals is JUST like Hitler! Waaaah!”

If it got 16 nominations it is unwatchable.

I loved the movie Bugonia. It was rather odd, but the characters drew me in. Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are two actors I never gave a thought to before this.
Basic Plot: Two conspiracy theorists kidnap a powerful pharmaceutical CEO, believing she is an alien sent to destroy the earth.

It sounds goofy, does it not? But the portrayals were so good and believable for the time of the film.
All characters had their redeeming aspects along with glaring, often disabling deficiencies. Emma deserves to win.

I think it’s all about the money. The movie biz has lost a lot of the profitability, people don’t go to theaters like they use to, plus pirating, plus tech has allowed companies like Netflix, Amazon, to pretty much grab Hollywood by the throat where they can get movies cheap or they don’t get shown.

Everything is going to change massively though in the coming years with Ai. Everybody involved in the movie industry, actors, directors, writers, costume designers, location scouts, union guys, they might as well start looking for other careers because when production companies see they can create everything including scripts, stories through Ai, all those people will become obsolete.

I think eventually if Democrats don’t destroy the world like they want to do, people will be able to make tailor made movies for their own entertainment. They can tell Ai “Ai, make me a movie starring myself where I am shipwrecked on a desert island inhabited by 2000 naked women in their 20s who all fight over me” LOL!

Actually Sinners started out very good then half way through then it turned into a bad vampire rip off of the movie Dusk till Dawn.

I couldn’t finish Sinners, Frankenstein wasn’t very good, and One Battle After Another sucked, and Weapons was pretty bad unless you are a witch or a disciple of them, but they all had big time leftwing and anti-Christian heavy handed messaging and some had some sexist and racist messaging.

What was your with Battle? It was a comedy. DiCaprio was playing an image of spent, washed up radicalism.

agree, AI will change the landscape. And you’re going to have a heart attack in your movie.
