State of emergency declared in multiple states as blizzard threatens to blanket 30 states and 200 million people brace for coldest storm EVER

A state of emergency was declared in several states ahead of a massive winter storm that could bring more than a foot of snow to much of the country.

More than 200 million people across parts of 30 states now face winter storm warnings from Friday through Sunday.

Meteorologists were expected to issue more within the next couple of days and upgrade some to winter storm warnings as the storm approaches.

When the blizzard hits, temperatures are expected to plunge as much as 30 degrees below normal in the Dakotas and Michigan, with the wind chill falling between 35 and 50 degrees below zero in some parts, according to the Weather Channel.

The National Weather Service now warns that 'nearly everyone east of the Rockies' will see some effect from the snow, ice or cold from Friday into early next week.

A state of emergency is now in effect in South Carolina, allowing state officials to mobilize resources, activate the National Guard and coordinate response efforts, and in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott activated the state emergency response resources on Tuesday to prepare for the storm.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein also declared a state of emergency on Wednesday, telling residents: 'A winter storm is approaching and now is the time to prepare.'

'Please get ready. Get everything you need in advance of the storm and have a plan in case your power goes out,' he urged North Carolinians, encouraging them to 'stay home and off the roads this weekend unless absolutely necessary, so first responders can do their jobs safely and effectively.'

Maryland Governor Wes Moore made a similar plea to residents as he declared a 'State of Preparedness' to boost the state's response and collaborations for potential impacts from the storm.

“I worry about ice. “

Agree! Terrible for driving.

When living in Alaska I learned about driving in ice fog which is truly terrifying. Worse than a blizzard, IMO.

Does this mean that all the 'global warming' grifters, I mean researchers will now become 'global cooling' researchers?

Gotta make a buck one way or another - right? /s

Don’t kid yourself. A Gulf storm will have warmer weather aloft. It may be 25 on the ground and 35 in the clouds.

Yeah, that forecast for us (2009 ice storm) was correct, but, NWS here didn’t make enough noise about the impacts, IMO, and the local forecasters sort of followed that too. Nobody actually explained that “catastrophic” meant some people would end up on generators for 3 weeks! None had ever experienced such an event, so, I suppose that’s “understandable”. At any rate, they’ve not made such a mistake again. OTOH, they also seem to try to not go too overboard with crying “wolf!” :-)

A couple of the younger local forecasters are worse about “wolf”, though.

(I guess the closest events since that ice storm would be a couple very heavy rain / widespread flash flooding events, and a couple F4 tornados, which I think they and the emergency services people mostly much got right.)

Whenever they post worse ever, consider the source.

The history for Jacksonville Fl was the coldest ever temp recorded was 7 degrees in 1985. Last nights low was about 50.

We have had a spate of cold weather for the past few weeks and it will continue through the end of the month, per Joe Bastardi. Meanwhile the lead up to Christmas was unseasonably warm. By the end of the year, the temps will average out, they almost always do. Looking at my kilowatt usage for the past 25 years, the average is within 50 kilowatts per month for the year dependent on the efficiency of the heat pump.

Keep an eye on the gas reserves in Europe. They think they can get thru winters with solar and wind batteries.

“””””One winter weekend a buddy and I went up north to the family shack (uninsulated but had a wood stove and electric oven). No snow storm, it was a beautiful clear winter weekend. But it was COLD. Minus 42F regular temperature (there was little to no wind). Even with both stoves going and a space heater, the 25’x25’ shack never warmed up.”””””

Good experience, being a Houstonian I learned a lot about cold while living in Wisconsin and Minnesota, from sub zero winter camping to automobiles, to the effects on houses when empty, I learned about warm clothing, how to keep beer from freezing in the ice chest, all kinds of exciting and valuable things, there is a lot to know.

Joe Bastardi last week said the snow is mostly on the east coast. Our coverage here include new jersey. I recon this looks like a noreaster and the moisture content must be from the ocean with those low temps. I’m hoping the 1 foot stays east of the Delaware river as it sometimes does.

"EVER"

Accurate and consistent weather measurements and tracking have only been going on for about 350 years and early weather tracking was very limited indeed. To say coldest EVER is little more than fear porn disguised as weather reporting. Cold? You bet, snow? Yep, it's winter, get used to it or move to a place where they don't have those things. Personally I love winter, next to fall it's my favorite time of year.
