Recalled tuna cans mistakenly shipped across 9 states despite 'potentially fatal' botulism warning (Genova brand)

Shoppers are being warned to avoid certain cans of Genova Yellowfin Tuna that were mistakenly sent to stores across nine states, even though the products were recalled last year.

The products are linked to a recall issued in February 2025 by Tri-Union Seafoods, which discovered a manufacturing defect affecting the "easy open" pull-tab lids on some cans.

The defect could cause the cans to "leak, or worse, be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning," according to a Monday announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Ingesting Clostridium botulinum bacteria can lead to botulism, a life-threatening illness that attacks the nervous system, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

"A third-party distributor inadvertently released quarantined product that was associated to a February 2025 recall," the FDA noted.

I would never buy that crap tuna, posing as first rate Italian fillets.

“Sorry Charlie! Starkist wants tuna that tastes good, not tuna with good taste,”. Better than salmon and pea salid.

Genova is highly rated, whether or not they try to pass off as the highest grade Italian is something you are apparently more versed in.

This will undoubtedly hurt their reputation. Seeing it was a third party that held the tuna in what should have been quarantine and then released it......some $hit is going to hit the fan.

The label on a can of tuna in my grocery store states that it contains the lowest amount of mercury of all leading brands. What a plus! /s

Of course it better than Starkist.

I was comparing it to Tonnino.

And domestically, Safe Catch.

Tonnino is good, impressive glass jar presentation which is very pricey (canned is more competitively priced) But no higher rated than Genova by many thousands of customers on many websites.

Possibly, but I'd also expect it was just an amateur outfit built to remove liability from the parent company. "We paid Lefty's Express to collect and destroy this product. We're not liable."

Expect more of such failures. These companies will do anything to put more money into the owners' pockets.

It's the same scenario with Boeing hiring a company to build their airframes only to find out when a hatch blows out over Portland that the technicians at the company weren't putting certain bolts in.

"The Boeing Company has officially completed its acquisition of Spirit AeroSystems, marking the end of a two-decade era of outsourcing that began when Boeing spun off its Wichita division in 2005... The move follows safety and quality challenges that have reshaped Boeing’s oversight, including the 737 MAX crashes in 2018–2019 and a 2024 door panel blowout linked to supplier quality issues..."

A risk one takes with any canned or home canning product. If it ain’t swelling then the food is likely not contaminated. Flippers or swellers are prime candidates for botulism. If it smells bad...throw it out.

Let the cans swell up real good then use them for target practice.
