Norway’s Prime Minister Fires Off a Terse Statement in Response to Wild Trump Screed

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre replied Monday to President Donald Trump’s highly controversial letter linking his desire to acquire Greenland to being snubbed for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is given out by a committee of five chosen by the Norwegian parliament.

“I can confirm that this is a text message that I received yesterday afternoon from President Trump. It came in response to a short text message from me to President Trump sent earlier on the same day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland Alexander Stubb,” Støre replied, adding:

"In our message to Trump we conveyed our opposition to his announced tariff increases against Norway, Finland and select other countries. We pointed to the need to de-escalate and proposed a telephone conversation between Trump, Stubb and myself on the same day. The response from Trump came shortly after the message was sent. It was his decision to share his message with other NATO leaders.

"Norway’s position on Greenland is clear. Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark on this matter. We also support that NATO in a responsible way is taking steps to strengthen security and stability in the Arctic. As regards the Nobel Peace Prize, I have clearly explained, including to president Trump what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government."

Trump’s letter to Norway, which was first reported on by PBS late Sunday night, read, “Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT.”

The letter sparked an immediate uproar among the political class, with many pundits and observers labeling it “embarrassing” and warning that it was severely damaging NATO to the benefit of Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

I trust Trump to figure out how to get there from here. His combination of the carrot and the stick, plus trolling to keep everybody off-balance, works quite well.

Help is on the way!

Ditto.

My bride and I support President Trump and look forward to more globalist applecarts being tipped over and more "grand chessboard" setups being upended.

“”You’re so perceptive.

Tell us your thinking as to why verbally beating up our allies clarifies our mission.””

***

Switching the narrative, eh? First you want Trump to “cut the pretense” and eliminate the “pr campaign”... and apparently just go ahead and “seize” (your word, not mine) Greenland....

and now you’re whining about “verbally beating up our allies”. So ....now you’re affirming and repeating the leftist/globalist BS that Trump is a bully. Got it.

Your post:
“If we’re going to seize it, it’s unnecessary to wage a p.r. campaign to persuade the rest of the world that we’re justified in doing so.”

Supporting the seizure of other countries doesn’t make you anti-globalist.

Since the US has a treaty with Denmark that allows us to use Greenland for defense, and supposedly extracting minerals from Greenland is prohibitively expensive, Trump’s actual objectives are an enigma. Possibilities:
1) The pathetic bitterness over the Nobel Prize reflects a desire to win something big and historic for his legacy (the obvious parallel being the Louisiana Purchase).
2) He wants to destroy NATO so the US can ally with Russia against China. Good luck with that one.
3) He wants to humiliate the NATO countries, just cause, not realizing that the US created NATO as our tool against the USSR.
4) He thinks the US needs Greenland because he has made sure Canada is not our friend. (There is a legit argument to be made that Canada is too weak to protect North America).
5) He has a thing about gratuitously alienating all possible constituencies to raise the odds against himself to impossible levels, then he’ll pull off a miracle as the underdog.
6) He never studied/learned from history, particularly the Melian Dialogue.
7) Something far beyond my power to discern. Explanations welcome.

A clever retort. I'll support President Trump, thanks. He's anti-globalist enough for me and my "boss."

Thanks for the word jumble.

I’ve been clear: seizing or invading or incorporating or annexing Greenland is completely unnecessary for national security.

BUT...

If, in his wisdom, President Trump is committed to this venture, there is nothing to be gained by verbally jousting with allies.

“Eurocrats are completely outclassed. Let them whine. They still think it’s 1970. Europe is a museum of antiquated thinking.”

Quite so. They’re upset America no longer pretends Europe is a world power.

Was it a jumble to you, then? There are pills for that, you know.

“”I’ve been clear: seizing or invading or incorporating or annexing Greenland is completely unnecessary for national security.””

Well, I haven’t read “all” of your posts, so....

But I’m not surprised that you’re opposed to acquiring Greenland. Most of the globalists and leftist Democrats are against it, as well. Odd, that.

“”If, in his wisdom, President Trump is committed to this venture, there is nothing to be gained by verbally jousting with allies.””

Verbally jousting with allies and with the Democrats, America’s enemy within, is pretty much what got Trump elected.... ie saying it like IT IS, for a change. Confronting them with facts, truth and reality. That’s what you’re calling verbal jousting. Again, not surprised at all.

Carry on.

Help is on the way!

Yeah, I'm not very happy about that. If we weren't prepared to take action in Iran, Trump should never have said that help is on the way and we were locked and loaded.

With that said, I'm still hoping that we're just waiting for the right moment for a successful attack. Our credibility (and Trump's) will suffer severely if we don't follow through. (But if we attack and fail, that's arguably worse.)

On the other hand, the photo op with Tucker Carlson wasn't encouraging.

But I don’t want my kids or my grandkids to be like him.

Don't worry, they will be shiftless like pop/granddad.

His megalomania will eventually be his downfall, if not in this world, then in the world to come.

Might want to rethink that point as you claim Christianity.

The white government in South Africa dismantled their nuclear program before giving up power. The UK and France will just turn over the keys.

Unlike the South Africans, the Europeans don’t have an adversarial relationship with their up-and-coming replacements.

The risk isn’t just (or even primarily) Russia and China — it’s a Europe under Sharia law. And if they still own it, they wouldn’t have to “invade.” They could just do whatever they want, on their own land.

Correct. They'll convert to Islam. Except for folks like Tommy Robinson who'll probably end up moving to America.

Which is why I like the idea of getting Greenland now, while we can. Purchasing it would be the best option.

"You know who was a master of ridicule? Tokyo Rose."

Is that / s / LOFL? Ok, gramps, guess how many people alive today have any idea who your worthless metaphor actually was. The last person identified as one of the Tokyo Rose made her first broadcast 80 years ago and died 20 years ago.

How many Americans are alive today that were alive when Nixon resigned? Less than 20%.

How many Americans are alive today that were alive during Ronaldus Magnus? Less than 60%.

Put the cap back on the bottle, grow the fu-k up, contribute to Free Republic, and stop being a FReeptard.
