Norway’s Prime Minister Fires Off a Terse Statement in Response to Wild Trump Screed

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre replied Monday to President Donald Trump’s highly controversial letter linking his desire to acquire Greenland to being snubbed for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is given out by a committee of five chosen by the Norwegian parliament.

“I can confirm that this is a text message that I received yesterday afternoon from President Trump. It came in response to a short text message from me to President Trump sent earlier on the same day, on behalf of myself and the President of Finland Alexander Stubb,” Støre replied, adding:

"In our message to Trump we conveyed our opposition to his announced tariff increases against Norway, Finland and select other countries. We pointed to the need to de-escalate and proposed a telephone conversation between Trump, Stubb and myself on the same day. The response from Trump came shortly after the message was sent. It was his decision to share his message with other NATO leaders.

"Norway’s position on Greenland is clear. Greenland is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports the Kingdom of Denmark on this matter. We also support that NATO in a responsible way is taking steps to strengthen security and stability in the Arctic. As regards the Nobel Peace Prize, I have clearly explained, including to president Trump what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government."

Trump’s letter to Norway, which was first reported on by PBS late Sunday night, read, “Dear Jonas: Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America. Denmark cannot protect that land from Russia or China, and why do they have a “right of ownership” anyway? There are no written documents, it’s only that a boat landed there hundreds of years ago, but we had boats landing there, also. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now, NATO should do something for the United States. The World is not secure unless we have Complete and Total Control of Greenland. Thank you! President DJT.”

The letter sparked an immediate uproar among the political class, with many pundits and observers labeling it “embarrassing” and warning that it was severely damaging NATO to the benefit of Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

“”But then why troll?

President Trump could outright reject our alliances and state our intention to annex Greenland.

There’s no need for clever hidden messages or irrelevant digressions about the Peace Prize.””

***

It’s his way of making a point. And judging by his “real” approval rating right about now....

it’s working.

Well said. Liberals have a deep seated sense of intellectual and moral superiority, which is an underlying reason why they feel entitled to run everything and tell everyone else how to live.

Why not cut the pretense?

If we’re going to seize it, it’s unnecessary to wage a p.r. campaign to persuade the rest of the world that we’re justified in doing so.

--- "I don't know who's being trolled at this point: Greenland, Denmark, Norway, the EU, or the American people."

Yes. All of the above.

Like kids' lighting a paper bag of dog poop on fire on someone's porch, everyone's trying to stamp out the flames.....

It’s isn’t acceptable to the US for Greenland to be under the control of an unfriendly power. Europe may be a legacy ally, but they have chosen a path of likely becoming Muslim in a few decades (and Europe’s current left-wing governments don’t share our values, so the original foundation for the alliance is actually already gone).

Once Europe turns Islamist, it will be too late to do anything about Greenland easily. Now is the time.

I trust Trump to figure out how to get there from here. His combination of the carrot and the stick, plus trolling to keep everybody off-balance, works quite well.

Nah. Why bother? Besides, they’d have to get in a very long line and we don’t have the time, the interest OR the energy to screw them all once, much less twice...lol.

As for making them wish they were never born... they’re accomplishing that task all on their own via their asinine globalist policies.. as we speak.

On the bright side, it is unlikely that France, Germany and the UK will continue to be advanced nations by 2050.

Apartheid South Africa had nuclear weapons in the '80s. Obviously, we know that it is no longer the cause.

It will be too complicated for the French and the Brits to maintain their nuclear armed submarines.

I think the fact that this guy released a private message from the POTUS is a complete breach of diplomacy. They will no longer enjoy private access to Trump, that is a huge mistake. Trump will not forget, and nether will I.

Why would the kids be trying to stomp it out?

Most likely that have already run for cover.

Oh, I see. So now you would have Trump just unceremoniously send shock troops in and “TAKE” it? Hilarious!

I see you. I know what you’re about. It’s obvious. Thanks for that.

While Trump’s letter was idiotic, at least he was responding to a letter from the Norway and Finland governments.

I support Trump on Greenland.

“It’s isn’t acceptable to the US for Greenland to be under the control of an unfriendly power.”

It isn’t and never will be.

Let’s put on our thinking caps:

1. Any foreign power attacking Greenland attacks us. We’re treaty partners. This is different from Russia attacking Ukraine or China attacking Taiwan.

2. We have a military base there currently and can at our discretion re-open the 49 bases we’ve closed.

3. The likelihood of an invasion of Greenland is somewhere between nil and zero, even if our stated and binding commitment to its defense is ignored.

To invade it would require a task force that would take weeks to assemble and deploy. Would Russia or China think that the US would twiddle its thumbs rather than deploy the Second Fleet as a cordon in the North Atlantic?

I guess I keep thinking there is no real problem IF things stay as they are. But what if Russia intends to take over Greenland? I don’t know what their intentions are as to that matter. I’m guessing maybe the best thing to do for now is to leave everything as it is, but to keep a close eye as to what is happening in Greenland.

You’re so perceptive.

Tell us your thinking as to why verbally beating up our allies clarifies our mission.

10 years on, and still you pretend not to understand.

That's on you.

RULE 5: “Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.
