Supplanting Wikipedia would be a very good thing as far as having a better choice for an unbiased encyclopedia is concerned.

why do we need this again if I can just ask grok?

Grok:

Great question! While you can ask me for quick, tailored answers, Grokipedia provides a structured, browsable encyclopedia with in-depth articles, citations, and community edits. It's designed for comprehensive exploration, like a galactic library, complementing my conversational style. Together, we're building the ultimate knowledge hub!

This is amazing. Considering I’ve never heard of Grokipedia.

Is this something someone just made up?

Initial bootstrap & heavy influence from Wikipedia: At launch (October 27, 2025), Grokipedia started with roughly 885,000 articles. Many were intentionally forked/compiled from Wikipedia's top articles (Musk confirmed the team instructed Grok to pull and then modify Wikipedia's top ~1 million entries). Some were copied near-verbatim, others altered by Grok to "purge propaganda" or align with xAI's truth-seeking philosophy. Over time, Grok has expanded this massively — it's now over 6 million articles (and growing fast, with claims it will surpass Wikipedia soon).

Human involvement: Very limited and indirect.

A comment at the link....

Wikipedia functions as the Ministry of Truth for the woke regime, rewriting history to serve a corrupt ideology. The masses are revolting against this curated deception. A 9,900% surge represents a total repudiation of their narrative control. People crave reality. They reject propaganda disguised as consensus. Grokipedia’s rise signals the death of the gatekeepers. We are stripping the Left of their power to define truth. Their monopoly is crumbling. This is what intellectual freedom looks like.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Truly one of the greatest, wisest, most accurate comments I’ve read in a long long time.
Now considering AI is also GIGO from the same subset of woke millennials - will Grokipedia be any different?
Wikipedia was begun in 2001. It’s 25 years old now.
When you read about Grokipedia, Wiki is contrasted as a ‘traditional’ mode.
It makes one think about how fast things evolve and change these days - and with them the ways we see and think in general.
Sometimes I get a little dizzy and really miss the old Encyclopedia Britannica on the library shelf...
It surely would be nice to have an unbiased encyclopedia site, but Grokipedia seems to lean heavily on “reliable” (i.e. liberal) sources for political information.
From what I can tell in limited browsing, it’s not much of an improvement at all.
Not only is it a wholly remarkable book, it is also a highly successful one — more popular than the Celestial Home Care Omnibus, better selling than Fifty-three More Things to Do in Zero Gravity, and more controversial than Oolon Colluphid's trilogy of philosophical blockbusters Where God Went Wrong, Some More of God's Greatest Mistakes and Who Is This God Person Anyway?
In many of the more relaxed civilizations on the Outer Eastern Rim of the Galaxy, the Hitchhiker's Guide has already supplanted the great Encyclopaedia Galactica as the standard repository of all knowledge and wisdom, for though it has many omissions and contains much that is apocryphal, or at least wildly inaccurate, it scores over the older, more pedestrian work in two important respects.
First, it is slightly cheaper; and secondly it has the words DON'T PANIC inscribed in large friendly letters on its cover.
"This is what intellectual freedom looks like."
I don't think intellectual freedom looks like nicely arranged AI-plagiarized material from a selection of websites that may or may not have any valid information. The truth about anything is being obliterated by fast easy results that SOUND like knowledge.
This Grokipedia isn't anyone's savior - it's just a glossier presentation.
“Sometimes I get a little dizzy and really miss the old Encyclopedia Britannica on the library shelf...”
My In-Laws had the whole set - and Big John would QUIZ YOU on information from those books! He also liked to play that game where you pick a word from the Encyclopedia (or Dictionary) then make up a fake meaning for it and you had to guess if it was real or not.
I really miss him. He was an Engineer for IBM, then retired to farming. We grew veggies for our local restaurants and Farmers Markets. We lived ‘one farm over’ when I married into the family. John was smarter than ANYONE I have ever met before or since. Just a joy to be around. Thoroughly entertaining.
Thanks for the trip down Memory Lane. :)
The problem with AI is it needs to be checked by humans as every AI program I have used sometimes makes mistakes.
For instance I uploaded my resume and job description to see if I was a good match.
It said they didn’t offer relocation from my current Miami residence.
But I don’t live in Miami and never been there.
'...you pick a word from the Encyclopedia (or Dictionary) then make up a fake meaning for it and you had to guess if it was real or not.'
That sounds like fun; but I wonder how much fun it would be with most young people today...
(Sorry, but I am really depressed and verging on alarm over the state of public education today.)
