According to a global survey of 130 countries conducted in 2019 (Kramer 2019), the US had the highest rate of children living in single-parent households of any nation in the world, at about 23%, or more than three times the worldwide level of 7% (Figure 1).
The prevalence of these cases was markedly lower in neighboring Canada and Mexico (15% and 7%, respectively), and much lower in developing countries, all below 5%.
For decades, the share of U.S. children living with a single parent has been rising, accompanied by a decline in marriage rates and a rise in births outside marriage (Livingston 2018). The percentage of US children living in single-parent households nearly tripled between 1960 and 2023, increasing from 9% to 25% (US Census Bureau 2023). In the same period, the share of households with fathers missing more than doubled, increasing from 11% to 25% (Figure 2).
The proportions of children living in a father-absent household varies considerably among America’s three major social groups: in 2023, the shares were 20%, 29% and 50% among Whites Hispanics and Blacks, respectively, and in all three groups they are substantially higher than 50 years before (Figure 3).
Children who grow up in a household with only one biological parent are worse off, on average, than children who grow up with both of their biological parents, regardless of the parents’ race or educational background (McLanahan and Sandefur 1996). For instance, they are nearly four times more likely to live in poverty (Brewer 2023), have more trouble academically, scoring poorly on tests of reading and mathematics, and are more likely to drop out of school.
The trend is correlated to the vast expansion of welfare, and the seductive inculcation of the use of the victim entitlement mentality linked to race.
No surprise at all there.
Because lefties, especially feminists, kept telling us that fathers either “don’t matter” - or are “authoritarian” and kids are better off without them.
The exact opposite of the truth...
Welfare recipients are rewarded for having kids without a father, more money for each one.
As a public school teacher for 33 years - I could tell which kids had a father in the home and which kids didn’t. The ones who didn’t were often wild, out of control and wouldn’t take direction. They often got in trouble not only at school, but with the law. A beleaguered single mother would come down to the school, who had no control over the child as well, telling us she “didn’t know what to do.”

It was by design, his Democrats knew what they were doing.

Did the Republicans back then not understand what was going on? Or did they decide to just kick the can down the road, and let a future generation worry about it?
I knew it was bad, but the numbers are much worse than I realized. I am ashamed of our record here.
The effects of having to chose between “husband” or “government check” was clear within a couple of years. Congress has had six decades to undo that mistake, but chose not to. Probably because welfare bastards are more likely to vote for Democrats.
Fornication and adultery kill us off, ultimately.
Fatherless households are producers of way more challenged kids (many of us here grew up so) and the societal harms are great.
Single motherhood is rampant among the indigent, especially among blacks.
Twenty and thirty something kids still living at home with mom and dad are mostly the spoiled children of the middle or even upper middle class who just like being layabouts.
It started with the destruction of the Black family but in 2026, no races are immune—20% of white families are headed by a single parent.
That's the bottom line. The Deep State is trying to turn America into an one party totalitarian state controlled by the Democratic Party.
I still don’t understand why we gave up on holding the fathers accountable.

LBJ in 1965 promised more help for single mothers than for two parent households. It destroyed us culturally and is big reason there are so many sicko Karens today.
