Florida's favorite grocery store slammed for 'criminal' prices as customers protest 'ridiculous' cost of meat

Publix has long been considered Florida's favorite supermarket, but it seems customers are turning their backs on the grocery giant.

One frustrated shopper recently took to Reddit to air their grievances after picking up a prime tenderloin steak at a Publix store in Yulee, Florida.

A photo of the package showed the meat priced at a jaw-dropping $61.49 — or $49.99 per pound.

'This is criminal,' the customer wrote.

'You can get a full ribeye or tenderloin dinner with table bread, 2 sides and softdrinks in Florida at a Outback, texas roadhouse or Longhorn for $26 - $31,' one wrote.

'Publix is wildly overpriced,' someone else chimed in.

As you said, Publix is great with workers always eager to help and every item is good quality. But prices for same item can be 20% higher than at nearby Walmart.

Outback, Texas Roadhouse and Longhorn likely aren't selling Prime. AI says Outback probably has Choice. And that meat pictured is "Greenwise". Folks don't have to pay a Woke tax for meat if they don't want to. There was a huge price range for bone-in ribeye at HEB. Prime from the butcher was several times what they were selling in the self serve coolers

They roped and branded the best beef in the land!

It’s a USDA Prime tenderloin steak.

Less than 10% of all beef produced qualifies as Prime. Of course it’s expensive.

Meat prices are terrible. Beef is priced right out of many people’s budget anymore.

I do my grocery shopping at Walmart, BUT I buy my meat at Winn Dixie. Unfortunately that is ending soon as my Winn Dixie closes on 2/1/26 and so far has no buyer. I’m hoping Piggly Wiggly buys it rather than Aldi...but no definitive word yet...sigh Those are only two names of potential buyers...

So long as energy prices stay high ALL things will cost more. People forget that just because an item doesn’t CONTAIN energy (e.g., bread contains flour) then energy must not figure in its cost.

To move, package, inspect, etc — this all takes energy.

Correct! If EBT holder gets $600 in free food stamps, $60 for a steak is no problem. It’s free to get paid by hard working tax payers who get no EBT card. If you work you pay for it. If you don’t work in a job, you get it free. What a system!!!

I am complaining and I do not get free food from the government. Anyone denying that these prices have skyrocketed in the past 5 years is delusional.

Prices like this happen and you just know that the conditions set by government meddling in production and inflation causes it.

Why wouldn’t a high price for food be more of a concern for someone poor enough for EBT?

It isn’t very smart to blow your 4 week food budget in 2 weeks, if you are poor.

Its not that bad here in Metro Atlanta. Publix is higher but the quality is so much better than Kroger or Wal-Mart that I frequently just pay the higher price.

I wonder why they hold beef at $50/pound over a price tag with other cuts at 15.oo pound? (See price tag in cooler.)

Obviously, buyers have less expensive choices.

It’s not just the prime that’s expensive at Publix.

I go to mine at least 5 times a week and I routinely check the beef prices out of curiosity.

Last time I saw a pack of 3-4 beef short ribs that were priced over $20.

My wife likes to do short ribs with vegetables in the crock pot which means it would take 2 packs.

That means $40 to $50 just for the meat and then whatever the cost of the vegetables would be.

Ridiculous

It’s not our favorite grocery store, it often leads only one available. There’s a Publix on every corner practically. I moved to Florida 10 years ago and I was so surprised at how expensive groceries are here. It seemed criminal then. A few years ago I discovered Walmart neighborhood store and the prices are at least 20% less.

I loved Publix while I lived down there, but alas, I couldn’t shop there very often because of the expense.

There were a variety of groceries where I lived in Pensacola. Publix was there, but we also had Wal-Mart, the cost-plus groceries Greer’s Cash Saver and Grocery Advantage, as well as Winn-Dixie before Aldi’s took them over and turned them into the grocery store equivalent of watching paint dry.

And, of course, the best thing about all those is you could buy beer and wine in those places! Up here in Maryland, apparently, the government believes only alcoholics would shop in grocery stores that sell beer and wine, because that’s not allowed.

Meat went sky high under Biden. I have not forgotten that. Could be because they didn’t want us peons eating beef because cattle farts cause climate change according to their xspurts. So they fixed it so beef would be more expensive and more scarce.
