Publix has long been considered Florida's favorite supermarket, but it seems customers are turning their backs on the grocery giant.
One frustrated shopper recently took to Reddit to air their grievances after picking up a prime tenderloin steak at a Publix store in Yulee, Florida.
A photo of the package showed the meat priced at a jaw-dropping $61.49 — or $49.99 per pound.
'This is criminal,' the customer wrote.
'You can get a full ribeye or tenderloin dinner with table bread, 2 sides and softdrinks in Florida at a Outback, texas roadhouse or Longhorn for $26 - $31,' one wrote.
'Publix is wildly overpriced,' someone else chimed in.

Much better prices, but selections can be limited.
I know you didn’t ask for it, but this is one of my very favorite recipes on how to use that corned beef once it’s cooked. Tip: Do not use leftover cabbage, carrots, and onions if you have them. This is best with fresh vegetables, and it’s a winner in my book. Ok, our book (me and hubby). Slice it as thin as you can get it. It need not be deli corned beef.

I’m in grocery stores a couple times a week as we prefer fresh food. Most shoppers seem to just grab what they like and don’t bother to look at prices. Many are in a hurry to get out of the store; others don’t care about prices I guess.

Her in our part of VA we have a Publix that moved in about 3.5 miles from our home. We were, and still are, not impressed. It is just like any other standard grocery store but with higher prices.
15 miles away, down in Fredericksburg, the Wegmans is fantastic and their prices aren't bad. They are so much better than Publix. We make it a point to go down there about once per week to get the things we can't get at the Commissary at Quantico.

We can afford to not care about prices, but the way I was raised, Mom and Dad had no choice but to care a LOT.
For decades as an adult, we lived a beyond-thrifty lifestyle. Now I can’t get that mindset out of my system, and can’t imagine spending willy-nilly for a good price.
So I care about prices and pay closed attention.
I too grew up in a very thrifty household and yes, it gets ingrained into your attitude about spending. To this day I still stop to pick up loose change on the street. ;)
Who kind of idiot did it take to write this stupidity I have been going to Publix for over forty years. They would have to shoot me to make me stop.
We all know that the leftist tree huggers have raged war against Bovines and other types of meat for a few decades and now they claim the "evil" Corporation is at fault. A pox...

I grew up in the 70s and 80s and almost never had steak. My dad was an engineer, and steak was still out of the question. For us a “country fried steak” at Shoney’s was a treat, lol. My mom was amazing at stretching the “protein” part of our budget. I remember we often had “soup beans” where the beans were cooked with a ham hock and served with corn bread. Hubby’s family was same.
She was the youngest of 12 kids, her dad died when she was a toddler so all she knew was living off the land and for pennies.
Anyway. Being able to eat steak regularly seems like something that’s just been the past few decades. We still do often, but mainly because we buy a cow at a time from a local farmer. It’s expensive but cheaper in the long run
Wasn’t there a “successful” effort by Greenie Beanies to reduce cattle population the US a few years back? If my memory is correct this meat price spike is the consequence.
Have to agree with this, as the main supermarket in our part of South Carolina is Publix. Fortunately there is competition in our area from Food Lion and Kroger. And I guess Walmart, but I can't stand shopping at Walmart.
Harris-Teeter is a great supermarket on nearby Hilton Head Island, but can be a bit pricey. Better quality and selection of products than Publix though.
I miss our excellent (and more reasonably priced overall) supermarkets in my former home state of Connecticut: Shop Rite, Stop & Shop and Big Y (plus wonderful family-owned markets like Geissler's and Highland Park Market).

Fortunately here in Lowcountry South Carolina, we have competition from several other supermarkets like Food Lion, a massive Kroger supermarket and Harris-Teeter. And Walmart. Also Aldi and Fresh Market, if they fit the "supermarket" category.
Publix has psyched me out on quality. I will buy beef there because I believe it cleaner and higher quality, than the beef at the local xxx supermarket.
This looks like shenanigans to me.
For over 30 years my wife has made a game of trying to find at least a penny per day. At the close of yesterday and 2025 she found $15.01. She has never found less than $10 and some years much more. This year she didn't find any bills.
Which is why, although I do shop at Publix, I buy my meat at Broward Meat & Fish Market.
