My answer is that God did not send Islam to punish mankind. When you leave God, God lets you suffer the consequences of your decisions. Nature abhors a vacuum and making God absent leaves you prone to idealogical vulnerabilities.

I would add, Islam looks like a fake totalitarian religion Satan cobbled together from Judao/Christianity.
As is said about socialism, its features are so appealing (or not) that they have to be forced on a population with totalitarianism (i.e., total control of every aspect of your life).
The Christian God is good in his nature but he allows evil to exist so that we know what is good. He loves us unconditionally even when we sin against Him.

I struggled many decades ago to read the Koran. More than anything it seemed a screed by Mohammed against people he hated, not unlike Hitler’s Mein Kampf.

It’s a bent of human nature, the sin nature really, that man does not tend to seek God when things are going well.
Ideally, it would be fantastic if people sought after God out of love and gratitude for what He has done for them, but we don’t.
It’s only during times of trouble that we seek Him.
The great thing is, He loves us so much, that instead of being offended by that, He uses that to draw us to Himself. So no, I don’t believe that God sent islam to punish us, but He did allow it’s expansion, because we (mankind) allowed for it and He can use it.
