Ted Cruz puts NCAA on notice as Iowa State loses tons of players to portal
fox news ^ | 30 December 2025 | Scott Thompson

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has been trying for years now to get more regulations around name, image and likeness (NIL) deals in college sports, saying back in 2023 that the landscape was "in peril."

….

The post pointed out that the Iowa State Cyclones, who just lost longtime head coach Matt Campbell to the vacant Penn State Nittany Lions job, only has 17 players remaining on their roster for next season. Among those players, only one was a starter.

Ted Cruz needs to mind his own business. This is not something a Texas senator needs to address. Why should the federal government care about the Iowa State football team.

“ Why should the federal government care about the Iowa State football team.”

The whole NIL is perverse and corrupt .

Yes Ted is working to shore up his standing here in Iowa with his involvement.
But the system is sick.

They should leave it alone. Every team goes through a time when they are a poor team. The market eventually corrects itself.

It’s too late to go back to the good old days. The only reasonable solution is to make players sign four year contracts guaranteeing to stay at the college in return for a guaranteed income, like professional athletes.

This and the transfer portal are disasters ruining college football. Something has to change.

Why should the federal government care about the Iowa State football team.

It's more about college football in general. Football programs outside of the SEC, Big10, Big12 etc are decimated annually by the "portal"

My favorite Washington State University, allegedly a DIV1 school, had 75 walk ons this year. They filled the gap lost to NIL and Portal. Most are gone now after having one season of DIV1 coaching. A new class of 70+ is expected this Spring.

The money in those big 3 conferences is squeezing the smaller one out of business.

“For only when government is limited are rights protected, the rule of law honored, and freedom allowed to flourish”.

Ted Cruz

Looks like Ted has changed his opinion on limited government.

I do not know much about the college sport particulars. That said, I feel the rules, both in-game and at the NCAA and the conferences administration, will continue to be bastardized by media/internet money and gambling interests.

My interest has fallen to almost nothing, as everything seems to be orchestrated. For the players, school spirit has taken a big backseat to player fame, fortune and pro ambitions.

Mr Constitutional scholar thinks the US government has a role in games at schools.

The only concerns a college football player should have is keeping themselves healthy and making as much money as possible.

I don’t know how this happened, but Division I college sports has become nothing more than a minor league for pro sports. I know that UCLA and USC have complained for over a decade about the distribution of money to the other Pacific 12 teams, which probably led to the dissolution of the league. Keyshawn Johnson recently spoke about the direction of people running Heritage Hall at SC. How can the ND-SC football game be cancelled? This is all about money, not tradition. College sports is a mess. Can it be fixed? The only way is to stop donating to the sports programs.

Yes, who the heck needs an education, anyway.

This is a mess - the whole concept of student athletics has essentially been destroyed.

Now they are letting former pros come back to college teams, knocking out high school recruitment.

NCAA brought this upon itself by treating the players like chattel to be used to maximize $$$.

Current title: “ Ted Cruz unloads on state of college football as programs get decimated by transfer portal: ‘Absolute crisis’”

I agree. The present system will lead to the separation of football, and also basketball, from the universities and NCAA, and the formation of a baseball-like minor league system.

Too bad.

They all have the option to pursue an education, but now they have an opportunity to earn their market value.

Most minor league baseball players don't even bother with college. Football players being pushed through and given all the "aids" needed have been around forever. It doesn't help if the good schools in the playoffs wind-up with up to an extra month of games.

That flies entirely in the face of the concept of *student* athletics.

“Why should the federal government care about the Iowa State football team.”

It is the concept of the portal that he is aiming at, not Iowa State that just fell victim to it. Portal is perverse. Probably the only time I have ever agreed with Cruz.

“portal is perverse”…are you equating it with porn and meth use?

Why is this the business of the federal government? This does not involve tax payer dollars.
