Russia Claims Ukraine Tried to Strike Putin’s Residence
Newsweek ^ | Dec 29, 2025 | Shane Croucher

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has claimed that President Vladimir Putin's state residence in the Novgorod region was the target of a Ukrainian drone attack overnight into Monday, and said it would have implications for the peace negotiations.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the claim as "typical Russian lies" made because Moscow does not want to end the war.

The allegation comes as U.S. President Donald Trump hailed progress toward peace following his latest talks with Zelensky at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday.

Securing a long-sought deal on Ukraine would be a crowning moment for Trump, the self-styled global peacemaker, who thinks Putin wants to end the war and has put pressure on Kyiv to make painful compromises because it is losing.

Strange, that's exactly what Ukraine attempted to do, even using cluster bombs on Ukrainians in the Donbas Region in 2014

“Fact is Vlad can vaporize St Z at any time of his choosing. He is showing much restraint.”

AI Overview

Analysts suggest that any perceived “restraint” by Vladimir Putin in the war in Ukraine is not a result of a desire for peace but a reflection of strategic constraints and a fear of direct military conflict with NATO.

Key reasons for Russia’s avoidance of certain escalatory options (such as using nuclear weapons or attacking NATO supply lines) include:

Fear of NATO Response
Russia has behaved cautiously to avoid risking direct conflict with the United States and other NATO members, which would likely lead to an overwhelming military response and a broader, potentially global, war.

Military Limitations
The initial invasion plan was based on flawed intelligence and an assumption of a quick victory. The Russian military has faced significant challenges, including a lack of a strong non-commissioned officer (NCO) corps, supply issues, and low morale, which have limited its capacity for complex, large-scale operations beyond artillery-heavy attrition warfare.

Information Bubble
Putin operates within an insular decision-making process where information flow is filtered to promote a view that Russia can win a protracted war, leading to strategic misjudgments about Ukrainian resolve and Western unity.

Internal Stability Concerns
A full, widespread national mobilization to increase troop numbers could fuel domestic unrest and cause thousands of young Russians to flee the country, a risk Putin is wary of taking.

Gradual Escalation by NATO
NATO’s incremental approach to providing support to Ukraine has, to some extent, limited Russia’s incentives to escalate drastically, as no single change in assistance was dramatic enough to risk an immediate war with the alliance.

Despite these constraints, analysts note that Russia is not showing true restraint in the overall brutality of the war, as evidenced by continued deliberate targeting of Ukraine’s critical civilian infrastructure and energy grid. The perceived “restraint” only applies to the most extreme options (direct conflict with NATO, use of nuclear weapons), not the intensity of the war within Ukraine itself.

How long would the war have been without assistance from Iran, China and North Korea?

Of course. Out of the whole GD mess, only Putin seems to have a clear strategy of what he wants while everyone else is trying to keep stirring things up so the drip off of the swirling grift keeps flowing into their bank accounts.

Might want to talk to the Fins, Poles, Lithuanians, Latvians, Estonians, Rumanians, Hungarians , Georgians, Chechnyians, and of the millions of Ukrainians starved, murdered and sent to camps.

And strangely enough, were allies with Russia until the globalists broke it up.

Ask the Finns now about joining NATO. Oops.

Yes, it’s just stuff happening which will result in Ukraine getting a better or a worse leader. It will be a crap shoot.

The two obama elections were a crap shoot. We had choices of bad or worse.

Russian-backed militias: Human Rights Watch documented that Russian-backed militias used surface-fired Uragan and Smerch cluster munition rockets during battles in eastern Ukraine in 2014 and 2015.

“Allies” interesting so being attacked and invaded and absorbed by Soviet Union in 1940, after the Soviet Union, allied with Nazi Germany attacked and invaded Poland makes you “allies”🤔

You are entitled to your opinion, but not your own “facts”

That is perhaps the most sick and twisted post I have seen in quite awhile.

Globalists 😂

Finland was an ally of Russia until globalists sold them out to NATO in 2023. Meanwhile, Finland still fields infantry fighting vehicles, armored personnel carriers, army artillery vehicles, howitzers, field guns, anti-aircraft guns, AK-47s, sniper rifles, and heavy machine guns from Russia.

The Polish Air Force still flies the MiG-29 as well as Russian helicopters. They also field mobile SAM systems, heavy machine guns, fragmentation grenades, RPGs, anti-tank missiles, land mines, self-propelled howitzers, amphibious vehicles, tank destroyers, and surface-to-air missiles from Russia.

You know, the kind of thing allies do.

Not my opinion. Not "my own" facts - just actual facts.

So much for "sick and twisted" post.

lol that is some twisted logic there.
Poles fly mig-29s and use other Soviet hardware because just like Ukraine when these countries VOTED to leave the soviet sphere and the Soviet Union dissolved the countries kept the weapons on their land.

Side note Ukraine gave back Soviet bombers and nukes for guarantee of non aggression, typical Russian lies

Poles, Ukrainians, Latvians, Lithuanians, and Estonians have not bought Soviet junk for sometime. US, S Korean, German, French….

Fins were never allies of Russia or Soviet Union. Conquered by russia in 1807, independence in 1917 after Russia lost to Germany and declared independence
Remember the Finish winter war of 1939, the Russians don’t like to talk about it😂

I have seen some strange stuff on FR, but yours certainly takes the cake. Stop listening to RT

FYI
YOU WON’T SEE ANY RUSSIAN EQUIPMENT 🤣

Wow. There are odd statements; there are very odd statements...and then there is that one.

Russia was indeed one of Finland's largest trading partners for many years. However, the third largest trading partner of the United States is...China. It doesn't make them our ally.

Finland wasn't forced to join an organization that was geared to defend against possible Russian aggression. They chose to do so.

Russia is a better ally to Poland than Kanada or Mexico is to the United States.

It was the other nuclear nations, including the United States, that insisted Ukraine turn over Soviet nuclear weapons to Russia. The nuclear nations were not going to allow another nuclear nation, especially Ukraine. Ukraine wouldn't have been independent if they didn't agree to it.

As for "non-aggression", again, go ask Victoria Nuland about that. She's got blood on her hands in Donbas.

As for "typical Russian lies", no one, except maybe The Crown, has lied more than the U.S. Propaganda Media. No one.

Nice spin. Your claim, not mine.

We don't sell military hardware to China, nor do we fly theirs. But as I posted, Poland and Finland do field Russian military hardware - like allies do.

I just asked an AI engine what are the main combat aircrafts of Poland and Finland.

Summary (Poland):
Current main fighter: F‑16 Fighting Falcon
Complementary light aircraft: FA‑50 Fighting Eagle
Future mainline fighter: F‑35A Lightning II (rolling out through 2026–2030)

Summary (Finland):
Current main fighter (operational): F/A‑18 Hornet
Next generation main fighter: F‑35A Lightning II

No mention of Migs, but maybe it’s lying.

I didn't say they were forced. I said they were sold out.

Their politicians sold out to globalists and now the people of Finland are forced to pay through the nose for oil from others instead of Russia right across the border.

All for fealty to globalists.
