Karen Bass declares emergency as floods wreak havoc across Los Angeles, closing roads and forcing evacuations

Thousands of California residents found themselves under evacuation orders on Christmas morning, as disastrous floods and debris flows closed down major highways.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a state of emergency as the holiday period was forecast to be a washout for the Golden State - with coastal areas expected to see several months' worth of rain within just a few days.

Some parts of Los Angeles County had already seen more than 11 inches of rain as of Wednesday night, as more than 61,000 California residents were without power, according to PowerOutage.us.

But meteorologists warn this is just the beginning of a dangerous series of winter storms that are set to pummel the area, with the National Weather Service warning 'life-threatening' conditions could persist through Christmas Day.

'Lives and property are in great danger,' the US Weather Prediction Center said in a forecast early Wednesday. 'Severe, widespread flash flooding is expected.'

That warning came as the National Weather Service took the rare step of issuing a 'high risk' alert for excessive rainfall in Los Angeles and areas to the north.

Bass has since issued a local emergency in the city of angels, citing 'high intensity rainfall on saturated soils' from the wildfires that tore through Southern California last year.

By issuing the declaration, Bass said she was ensuring that local departments had adequate resources to respond to the brutal effects of the storm.

Utter destruction is coming to wash away what remains of the ground in the vast burned out areas.

The worry about Mt Aetna sliding into the sea is going to be reality in Los Angeles as entire hillsides give way after being lubricated by 10 Inches of rain.

There is no joy in Mudville as Mayor Bass strikes out

Yep. Have relatives visiting this afternoon - but the freeway near me is flooded and closed. It may be a very quiet Christmas in my house today.

Heavy rains, including atmospheric rivers and atmospheric bombs are rare for So Cal this time of year - but do happen occasionally. We’ve had several recently - with more on the way next week.

Maybe there’s something to those conspiracy theorists around here who claim it’s from cloud seeding.

As a gardener, I welcome the rain in this drought - stricken part of the country...

To add to that, Karen Bass is an incompetent idiot, in Africa partying during the devastating wild fires last year - she blamed the lesbian fire chief for incompetence and fired her - but needs to look in a mirror.

My money is on her re-election.

Will they just make up their minds!!!

NO WATER, TOO MUCH WATER? Which is it?

Maybe they should catch and store all this water for the next fire?

“I hope she will take the opportunity to top-off the reservoirs this time.”

that would be possible only if they fixed the pumps that lift the water to the reservoirs AND the rainwater is collected somewhere from which it can be pumped ... of course, given LA’s “leadership”, neither condition is likely ... [for one thing, collecting rainwater is evil because it requires evil dams ... but on the bright side, the train to nowhere that no one will ride is on track [no pun intended] to be complete sometime in the 22nd century]

“Did she issue the order from Ghana?”

no, but she’s apparently under the delusion that signing a declaration is the only action needed for necessary resources to magically appear ...

Well, that reservoir in the middle that was drained just before an arsonist started the PPalisades fire — is drained again. Just in time for LA windy/fire season. Just like last time.

Wonder what neighborhood is targeted for low-income housing replacements this time.

They had the fire, now they’re having floods. All that’s left for the California trifecta is a major earthquake.

No wonder most of the people leaving California are coming from the LA metro area (based on my personal experience, anyway).

Time for Karen to head back to the Dark Continent for the holidays. Kwanzaa never really caught on here and Afrika never got the memo about any Umpteenth Kwanzaa.

That people chose a legislator who does nothing but sit on committees and write laws and who has never run a business, met a payroll, managed employees, departments and bureaus, never had to operate with a budget, etc. etc. over an executive who has actually had to run things and make them work (Caruso) is astounding, and sadly unsurprising.

Karen Bass doesn't know how to do her job ... but she's pro abort, pro illegals and black, and apparently that's all that matters.

Enjoy the suck, Los Angeles.
