Russian petrol prices are rising due to fiscal pressure, with the state taking up to 60% of the cost per litre in taxes and levies.
Russia also operates a so-called damper mechanism that makes fuel prices largely independent of global oil prices but prevents them from falling.
Yury Stankevich, deputy chairman of the State Duma's energy committee, previously proposed considering the possibility of introducing fuel subsidies for specific groups of Russian citizens following the same programme developed in Iran more than a decade ago.
The parliamentarian said it is impossible to deny the social significance of fuel prices.
The contrast comes as Russia's inflation continues to accelerate, with the central bank warning that price growth could reach 9% for 2024, well above its 4% target.
Fuel price increases compound household budget pressures as wages struggle to keep pace with rising living costs.
Russian petrol (gasoline) has become 8% more expensive than in the United States, where fuel prices have dropped below $3 per gallon for the first time since 2021 on December 8.
Whilst American drivers benefit from global market dynamics of the Trump administration, Russian motorists face a state-controlled pricing system that shields revenues but leaves consumers bearing the burden of higher costs.
Market analysts told Nezavisimaya Gazeta that falling US fuel prices stem from declining global crude oil prices, which account for up to half of fuel costs.
The situation was caused by stagnating demand and reduced travel.

Good we can kick out all the H1B from India, since they are now allied with Russia. What! They/India are greatly reducing oil imports from Russia? US Sanctions did it.
Their prices are 8% higher than the US? Funny how the article doesn’t mention France, Germany, England, California, or other Wesstern authoritarian, non-free-market states. My quick check says gas in France is around $7.00 per gallon. That’s more like 100% higher, if correct.
Russian petrol (gasoline) has become 8% more expensive than in the United States.
When oil is under $90.00 a barrel Russia is losing money.
Prices are pricier?
Doesn’t seem to be confirmation of ending / reducing oil imports (they can’t, btw, they have the fastest growing oil import reqmt in the world and less than 1 million bpd of domestic production). Probably more important, that oil production is in decline. They just don’t have oil and their consumption is exploding. Not really a scenario that should generate a decline in price, unless they are indeed able to get Russian oil and thus avoid global scarcity.
BTW, Modi personally met Putin at the Delhi airport, described as a sharp departure from standard diplomatic protocol when a foreign minister is usually dispatched.
The original article from IntelliNews was polemical. Focusing on Russia and our United States, it seems to say one thing. To me what it says is "hurrah for the USA!"
Unlike most of the world, and ALL of the prominent EU nations in the news today, we are half and less than most of them in price / cost.
It is then wise to ask "why?"
It comes down to taxation, as well as simple access to petroleum. That's it. Full stop. Punkt. Basta. C'est tout.
Here's a small point. IntelliNews is based in Berlin, Germany. One does not see this by its re-publishing through MSN. One is seeing the German perspective, and so one does NOT see Germany in the article about Russian and American gas prices. There is a reason.....
How much higher are gas prices in Europe and Ukraine than here?
Higher gas prices must mean Ruzzians are paying more for eggs.
Since transportation and delivery costs to stores have increased.
Pricier Prices!!!
U want cheap gas.... avoid Russians
“India’s imports of Russian oil fell by nearly a third after stringent US sanctions on key Kremlin-linked exporters came into effect on November 21, and analysts expect further declines in December as refiners turned to alternatives to avoid breaching sanctions.”
Putin kowtowing to Modi is designed to counteract the US sanctions effect. Which has scared off Indian importers, buying from Rosneft and Lukeoil.
BTW 1/3 decline would be in barrels or dollars?
GAZPROMneft is a clever maneuver, btw. It is not clear why the US did not declare ALL RUSSIAN SOURCES OF ANYTHING. There must be some reason for restricting to Rosneft and Lukoil.
I don't know about where you live, but gas here in central NY hasn't been below $3.00 for years. It's $3.09 currently where I live.
“There must be some reason for restricting to Rosneft and Lukoil.”
Bankrupt them and them’s oligarch’s first. As an example to the others and Bad Vlad. Trump does not appreciate Vlad treating him as an after thought, just because he is unable get his enemies defenestrated.
More telepathy.
