Oops! Prestigious Science Journal Retracts Climate Study That Predicted Imminent Economic Catastrophe
Red State ^ | 12/03/2025 | Bob Hoge

Posted on 12/03/2025 10:15:33 PM PST by SeekAndFind

Hoo boy. Sometimes, you might do something so embarrassing, so humiliating, that you want to hide in the closet. The prestigious science journal Nature may be thinking about doing that right about now, because on Wednesday, they officially retracted an influential 2024 climate report that predicted gloom and doom, death and misery, and impending economic catastrophe.

As is the case with so much of the leftist climate narrative, their wild claims were quite simply unproven:

In April 2024, the prestigious journal Nature released a study finding that climate change would cause far more economic damage by the end of the century than previous estimates had suggested. The conclusion grabbed headlines and citations around the world, and was incorporated in risk management scenarios used by central banks.

On Wednesday, Nature retracted it, adding to the debate on the extent of climate change’s toll on society.

Shocker — it seems as if they were relying on flawed data.

The decision came after a team of economists noticed problems with the data for one country, Uzbekistan, that significantly skewed the results. If Uzbekistan were excluded, they found, the damages would look similar to earlier research. Instead of a 62 percent decline in economic output by 2100 in a world where carbon emissions continue unabated, global output would be reduced by 23 percent.

The house of cards that is climate science is coming crashing down.

@Nature is not a serious journal anymore. https://t.co/7zm22iGh6x pic.twitter.com/0HSjGX0dPz— Dr. Matthew M. Wielicki (@MatthewWielicki) December 3, 2025

RedState’s Ward Clark has long been busy calling out the shrill climate hysterics.

Climate Change's Cruel Joke: French Destroy Crops to Tame Overproduction

There’s been so much agitation and misinformation regarding the climate that even noted environmental alarmist and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates softened his language in October before the COP30 summit. We need to cut down on the “doomsday” rhetoric, he argued, because the facts often don't support the wild claims.

Billionaire Bill Gates has dramatically changed his position on climate change, acknowledging for this first time there is no “doomsday” risk from global warming.

Meanwhile, Nature said in a statement on their website: “The authors acknowledge that these changes are too substantial for a correction, leading to the retraction of the paper.” The researchers are reworking the article with the updated data and hope to have a peer-reviewed version ready in the near future.

Their predictions are all still of the “we’re all going to die” variety, however, even with the updated data, but it’s hard to take what they say at face value when they just screwed up this badly in one of the major scientific journals in the world.

Lint Barrage, chair of energy and climate economics at The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich), pointed to other potential flaws in the study and had an excellent observation about confirmation bias: “It can feel sometimes, depending on the audience, that there’s an expectation of finding large [climate damage] estimates,” Ms. Barrage said. “If your goal is to try to make the case for climate change, you have crossed the line from scientist to activist, and why would the public trust you?”

That’s my question, too.

Perhaps Mr. Gates has been a contributing sponsor of Nature Magazine throughout the doomsday countdown. Now that he’s changed his mind, his dollars speak a softer tone...

I remember the “experts” in the mid to late 1970s who were sure we were going into a global cooling new ice age. Time had a story about how our cold winters were like the ones in the 1700s where George Washington allegedly threw a silver dollar across the Potomac (because he had walked across most of the totally hard frozen Potomac).

SF writers chimed in as this great cover of Universe 2 for a Robert Silverberg near future ice age story When We Went to See the End of the World.

Trying to imagine a model of the global economy where Uzbekistanian data would have such a major effect on the results.

Yes, that raised an eyebrow.

A tiny, backwards nation with a GDP of $115 Billion USD can skew the world’s economy by 40 percent?

Me thinks there is a whole bunch more wrong with their calculation than that.

Co2 is life giving gas necessary to support life.
There is lack of Co2 in the atmosphere.
The planet is better with more CO2.
The cost of Co2 releases is NEGATIVE!

Why didn’t he do what every other Global Warming “scientist” has done over the past several decades when his climate doom forecast didn’t happen? Just ignore it and make an even more hysterical prediction for the future.

The real reason they retracted the study was because it exposed the economic damage that will be caused by climate change POLICY.

Wow that could have been another point of no return.....

The many points of no return.
By me BFW

**1980**

Global warming apocalypse 1980s edition The U.N. was already claiming in the late 1980s that the world had only a decade to solve global warming or face the consequences. The San Jose Mercury News reported June 30, 1989 that a “senior environmental official at the United Nations, Noel Brown, says entire nations could be wiped off the face of the earth by rising sea levels if global warming is not reversed by the year 2000.” That prediction didn’t come true 17 years ago (29 Years NOW), and the U.N. Is sounding the same alarm today.

**2002**

Environmentalists warned in 2002 the world had a decade to go green Environmentalist write George Monbiot wrote in the UK Guardian that within “as little as 10 years, the world will be faced with a choice: arable farming either continues to feed the world’s animals or it continues to feed the world’s people. It cannot do both.”

About 930 million people around the world were undernourished in 2002, according to U.N. data. By 2014, that number shrank to 805 million. Sorry, Monbiot.

**2007**

The U.N.’s top climate scientist said in 2007 we only had four years to save the world Rajendra Pachauri, the former head of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change said in 2007 that if “there’s no action before 2012, that’s too late.” “What we do in the next two to three years will determine our future. This is the defining moment,” he said. Well, it’s 2017 and no new U.N. climate treaty has been presented. The only thing that’s changed since then is that Pachauri was forced to resign earlier this year amid accusations he sexually harassed multiple female coworkers.

**2008**

FOURTEEN YEARS AGO… Al Gore Predicted North Pole Would Be Completely Ice Free by
Today. Gore made the prediction to a German audience in 2008. He told them that “the entire North ‘polarized’ cap will disappear in 5 years.”

http://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2017/12/nine-years-ago-al-gore-predicted-north-pole-completely-ice-free-today/

**2009**

Prince Charles famously warned in July 2009 that humanity had only 96 months to save the world from “irretrievable climate and ecosystem collapse, and all that goes with it.” That deadline has passed, and the prince has not issued an update to when the world needs to be saved.

**2009**

Even before that, then-National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Space Flight Center head James Hansen warned in 2009 that Obama only “has four years to save Earth.” World leaders met in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2009 to potentially hash out another climate treaty. That same year, the head of Canada’s Green Party wrote that there was only “hours” left to stop global warming.
“We have hours to act to avert a slow-motion tsunami that could destroy civilization as we know it,” Elizabeth May, leader of the Greens in Canada, wrote in 2009. “Earth has a long time. Humanity does not. We need to act urgently. We no longer have decades; we have hours. We mark that in Earth Hour on Saturday.”

**2009**

United Kingdom Prime Minister Gordon Brown said there was only 50 days left to save Earth The year 2009 was a bad time for global warming predictions. That year Brown warned there was only “50 days to save the world from global warming,” the BBC reported. According to Brown there was “no plan B.” Brown has been booted out of office since then.

**2012**

The United Nations Foundation President Tim Wirth told Climatewire in 2012 that Obama’s second term was “the last window of opportunity” to impose policies to restrict fossil fuel use. Wirth said it’s “the last chance we have to get anything approaching 2 degrees Centigrade,” adding that if “we don’t do it now, we are committing the world to a drastically different place.”

**2014**

France’s foreign minister said we only have “500 days” to stop “climate chaos” When Laurent Fabius met with Secretary of State John Kerry on May 13, 2014 to talk about world issues he said “we have 500 days to avoid climate chaos.” Ironically at the time of Fabius’ comments, the U.N. had scheduled a climate summit to meet in Paris in December 2015 — some 565 days after his remarks. Looks like the U.N. is 65 days too late to save the world. Make that years.

**2015**

World leaders meeting at the Vatican issued a statement saying that 2015 was the “last effective opportunity to negotiate arrangements that keep human-induced warming below 2-degrees [Celsius].”
Pope Francis wants to weigh in on global warming, and is expected to issue an encyclical saying basically the same thing. Francis reiterated that 2015 is the last chance to stop massive warming.
But what he should really say is that the U.N. conference is the “last” chance to cut a deal to stem global warming…since last year when the U.N. said basically the same thing about 2014’s climate summit. Jan 2 2016 24 days to Al Gore’s ’10 years to save the planet’ and ‘point of no return’ planetary emergency deadline.

**2018**

While Trump rejects science, Obama and Clinton warn of climate change’s urgent danger By Greta Moran on Sep 7, 2018 The Democratic Party VIPs offered sobering remarks on the immediacy of
climate change on Friday. Former President Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton warned separately that climate change is not an intangible, future threat, but one that is at this moment devastating the planet and its inhabitants. During a “State of Democracy” speech at the University of Illinois, Obama offered a science-backed reminder: “We know that climate change isn’t just coming. It is here.” Clinton issued a similar sentiment on Twitter. “We’re not fighting for the planet in some abstract sense here,” she said. “We’re fighting for our continued ability to live on it.” She pointed to record-high temperatures across the world, the biggest wildfire in California history, and an unprecedented red tide in Florida — all visible signs that climate change is something to be contending with right now.

PRESS RELEASE

Deadline for climate action – Act strongly before 2035 to keep warming below 2°C >30 August 2018 If governments don’t act decisively by 2035 to fight climate change, humanity could cross a **point of no return** after which limiting global warming below 2°C in 2100 will be unlikely, according to a new study by scientists in the UK and the Netherlands.

Just like little Greta said, that by the summer of 2023 it would be too late to do anything about the climate.
But, she's still out there pushing it. Wonder why.

The retraction doesn’t really matter, IMO. The media that used the article for their propganda since it was published won’t report on the retraction, and will likely just continue on as before.

This will never make it to public attention.
