Trump says Americans may soon pay ‘no income tax’ as White House explores alternative revenue streams

President Donald Trump suggested Tuesday that Americans may "not even have income tax to pay" in the near future, saying tariff-driven revenue could allow for the historic elimination of the federal income tax under his tenure.

Trump told a press gaggle after his cabinet meeting that "at some point in the not too distant future you won’t even have income tax to pay," arguing that revenue the government is collecting under his administration is now "so great… so enormous."

"Whether you get rid of it or just keep it around for fun or have it really low, much lower than it is now, but you won't be paying income tax," Trump added.

If enacted, abolishing income tax would mark the most ambitious overhaul of the American tax system in more than a century. Trump’s repeated public support for replacing income tax with tariffs makes this the most explicit endorsement yet.

Earlier in his second administration, the president floated a tax plan eliminating income tax for individuals earning under $150,000, with tariffs proposed as a replacement.

"It's time for the United States to return to the system that made us richer and more powerful than ever before," the president said back in January. "Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich foreign nations, we should be tariffing and taxing foreign nations to enrich our citizens."

Never will happen as the National Debt was created by design.

“Why not pay off the national debt first?”

###############

Possibly the right idea in theory, but that would collapse the economy and lose every election in the meantime.

Paying off the national debt should surely come first, I’d think. After that if they wanted to eliminate income tax...fine, except you’d better put that extra money in a safe place or use it to pay off present expenses before the fed changes their mind again.

Lets just hope that the dems don’t take over any time soon or ever. What a pathetic bunch of grifters. I read somewhere some time ago, that a 10% tax on everyone who worked would be enough to pay off the national debt in a few years.

I wonder if he is only talking about the federal withholding portion....Because as you say, stopping the medicare and social security portions would open a huge can of worms.

Won’t do much good unless you prohibit the states from raising their income taxes to capture what the feds stop collecting. Th interplay of state and fed is a long-term waltz designed to keep governments from collecting as much income from the citizens as the citizens will tolerate.

Also, we sometimes forget that much of the power of the federal government has been accretions from the cowardly state governments who want monies but don’t want the citizens blaming them for high taxes. So, in return for being the taxing “bad guy”, the fed gets to flex more and more power against both the states and the individuals. While changing the source of federal funds would work somewhat, you have to rein in the states before the citizens would see the real benefits.

“I agree. I am sick and tired of this ‘means testing’ crap.
There are now a dozen items in the tax code that are means tested. It is back-door Socialism Light!”

There really are some seriously handicapped people who need help/subsistence. They only make up a small minority of the big bowl of leeches, but their needs are tangible.

And traditional “charities” and church programs have gone by the wayside - the richest church on the planet is too cheap to spend her money on those who need assistance these days.

Tariffs are better because it does the same thing BUT A TARIFF PROMOTES DOMESTIC INDUSTRY.

“the richest church on the planet is too cheap to spend her money”

It’s hinky to me that churches are even referred to in the perspective of wealth. I do know that’s a thing, but churches shouldn’t be wealthy when Job One is to bring people to Christ.

Still, it’s notable that “the richest church on the planet” began life as a revenue-generating scheme. So, right or wrong, it makes sense that wealth is a factor. And that denomination spends more money helping perverts and illegals who hate America than they do bringing people to Christ.

I think he is referring to the oft mislabeled wage tax that they call income via SCOTUS Glenshaw-Glass court case. The penumbras were just getting started in 1952. They needed to feed the beast. If it included real income, then that’s great too. The wage tax as implemented should be apportioned and has been unlawfully collected for 60 years.

I think in a final act before he takes his dirt nap, Soros and all his wealth should go to pay down the debt,

And any other confiscated wealth from the Deep State and Swamp can help towards that goal.

The numbers say he is wrong. We do not import enough - in dollar terms, to tariff imports enough to get anything near what the federal government is spending or even just what it ought to be spending. You could tariff imports 100% and it would not be enough.

How about you just pay off the debt and Give stability to SS and Medicare?

The Social SS paid to those recieving it is but a drop in the bucket compared to the Federal agencies funded from this pool.

Social Security is the cornerstone of the welfare state.
It is the first plank in the federal government’s effort to create a class of citizenry that is dependent on the government.

The payroll tax amounts shown on paychecks generally do not account for the taxes that employers pay.Payroll taxes levied on employers are mainly borne by employees in the form of reduced wages.

Roosevelt falsely promoted Social Security to Americans as a “savings account for the old age of the worker” with contributions made by employers and employees through payroll taxes “held by the government solely for the benefit of the worker in his old age.” This was an intentional lie, but it is what causes people to still believe that Social Security is for Us. It is the largest annual expenditure of the federal government.

Genuine question, not trying to make a point: why would paying off the debt crash the economy?

Donald J. Trump, the real great emancipator.

Income tax is indentured servitude and indentured servitude -- without the freely-given consent of the indentured -- is SLAVERY.

The first national income tax in the USA was created by the Revenue Act of 1861, which was signed into law by POTUS Abraham Lincoln.

So the man who allegedly "freed the slaves" in fact enslaved the entire nation.
