I too came here first in the chaos of the Florida recount fiasco.
Checking in darn near every day for some time since.
I was 35 then, my now adult kids were all babies. Time flies doesn’t it.
Not sure about your close your tags comment but I will add a little FR History.
A long time ago if you wanted to emphasize a point you could put several LARGE BOLD html commands in there without closing tags and others did so much you couldn’t even see the screen so knowing a little HTML I just took a black square, made it a huge image and posted it as an article.
You couldn’t see anything on the site. No home page no nothing. Not sure whether it was Jimrob or Johnrob but they figured it out in short order and every post from then on resets things to standard parameters.
So “close your tags” makes no sense to me - I glanced at the HTML and didn’t see anything weird.
Still you’re welcome - I fixed that problem from long ago.

Sorry - should have mentioned that I couldn’t even see the FR screen, really late at night. there’s an outside chance alcohol was involved but they just fixed things without any repercussions to me. They just fixed it.
The net effect was simply once a post was set LARGE LARGE LARGE BOLD BOLD BOLD without closing tags it stayed that way. So I fixed it.

Congratulations! I’ve been here since March 2010, but I don’t remember for the life of me how I even found Free Republic. Gosh, sometimes it sucks getting old! 😂
Maybe...But my observation has been that the the old time, logical members, were driven off by the rabid, political purists and their constant attacks.
It's still going on, leading me to post an opinion and refusing to get into a pissing contest with the still resident purists......
And I might add, that back in 2012, I was banned due to losing my patience from the constant attacks against me, simply because I voted for the GOP presidential candidate at that time. The Political Purists were out in force and eventually drove off many great, logical FReepers...
Back when you and I joined FR there was a persisten issue where posters forgot to “turn off” the italic or other font feature, causing the next oost to maintain that style. Hence the frequent adminition, “Close your tags!”
Class of ‘98…. Makes me a series FReeper!!
