Kristin Chenoweth's new Broadway show will close months earlier than expected amid slow ticket sales, shocking reviews and the star's comments about slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk - leading some to speculate her support for Kirk's family got the play cancelled.
The Queen of Versailles, which just opened on November 9, will hold its final performance on January 4 after previously having dates listed through March 29.
Chenoweth, best known for playing Glinda in the original stage production of Wicked, was the target of intense criticism in September after Kirk's assassination for showing sympathy to his family in a social media post.
'I'm. So. Upset. Didn't always agree, but appreciated some perspectives,' the 57-year-old wrote on Instagram.
'What a heartbreak. His young family. I know where he is now. Heaven. But still.'
The comments by Chenoweth, who has a large LGBT following, sparked outrage from fans who inundated her with critical comments.
The Broadway icon told the The Hollywood Reporter this month that the backlash 'almost broke' her.
'It was tough on me, but I'm not going to answer any questions about it because I dealt with it,' she said of the Kirk controversy.
Chenoweth's role in the play, which is based on a 2012 documentary about a Florida couple seeking to build a luxurious abode just before the 2008 financial crisis, had been in the works for five years.
'I dare say I just think it's a very topical piece,' she told the Hollywood Reporter.
'People will have things to say about it, whether they're good or bad.'
The show began previews on October 8 following a successful stint at the Emerson Colonial Theater in Boston.

“Everybody’s got AIDS AIDS AIDS, AIDSAIDSAIDS, AIDSAIDSAIDS, AIDS, AAAAIIIIDDDDSSSS!”
“Come on ev’rybody we’ve got quilting to do!”
But it’s not the right they are blaming.
The Gays came after her because she said something nice about Kirk.
Poor woman can’t win.
The theatre’s so obsessed
With dramas so depressed
It’s hard to sell a ticket on Broadway
Shows should be more pretty
Shows should be more witty
Shows should be more...
What’s the word?
Gay?
Exactly!
No matter what you do on the stage
Keep it light, keep it bright, keep it gay!
Whether it’s murder, mayhem or rage
Don’t complain, it’s a pain
Keep it gay!
Um. That makes no sense.
GRAND OPENING——GRAND CLOSING===”CHRIS ROCK”
Say 99 liberal things and one conservative thing and you get slaughtered just like a full on conservative. JK Rowling is the prime example.
GRAND OPENING——GRAND CLOSING===”CHRIS ROCK”
A little different crowd than the one Chris was describing there.
insanity.
The last time I went to see a show on Broadway, there was a huge balloon hung over the theater district that bore the words “Equity Against AIDS” or something similar. Visible all over Manhattan. That was in the 90s.
Kristin comes from a very conservative, Christian family. She had strayed into liberalism after her “Wicked” success, but recently had eased off off politics on her Instagram posts. I got to see her in “Wicked” (w Idina Menzel) years ago, and it was the best Broadway performance I have ever seen. I really hope she is 100% red-pilled by this as to who the real demons are: her “LGBTQ friends.”
They're not blaming the right, they're blaming the left as Chenoweth had the audacity to express sympathy for Charlie Kirk and his family.
Is she Mormon? I saw a great Christmas special she did with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and thought she might be one.
No, I don't believe so. She was adopted into an Oklahoma family when she was a week old. She first got noticed with a solo appearance at a the Southern Baptist Convention national conference at the age of 12.
When people hate Trump it’s really strange. They don’t change their minds. Ever as much as they say they did. Even if they say they voted for him. And when they feel safe expressing their Trump hatred the let it out in a hateful hiss.
Kat Timpf did it the other night on gutfeld. Very self righteous
When they get together in a gang like this. Ya they can shut down a show. Especially in Manhattan.
They are senseless with hatred for Trump and anyone associated with Trump like the late Charlie Kirk
Good. Keep up the boycott, she deserves it.
I will never watch anything she is in ever again.
That's because it's an increasing trend here for some people to not even bother to read the article. It's all knee-jerk reaction and the rush to be the first to say something "clever."
It sounds horrible and new shows fail like this all the time.
She’s a firecracker!!
