Probably was ruined by a few trout-pouts influencers on Instagram. This is why we cannot have any nice apple pies.

That pie loos like crap. The 7-11 has a better looking pie in the microwave rack. They are just trolling for eyeballs.

If you want great apple pie and fall foliage, north west Jersey, Pennsy, and north into New England has some of the best apples and scenery in the country in the fall not to mention the aroma of maple syrup. Why go to a crowded little town full of tourists? Maybe something I’m missing.

celebrated for its iconic apple pies and historic streets lined with specialty shops

In other words, a tourist town. So now tourists go there. Boo hoo.

This sounds like every other Hallmark movie where a failing business- candy store, bakery, café, etc., is saved, leading to a marriage.

I’d run with it! Make hay while the sun shines, etc.

Who are these ‘influencers’ and how can I get more people to visit my Cow Town, Population 283, bringing bags of cash to spend? ;)

I keep telling Beau we need to buy up the whole THREE BLOCKS of Main Street and get busy and rehab it into a tourist destination. This is the town where he was born and grew up. Our farm is about 10 miles outside of town.

We already have a few empty storefronts in historic buildings, a gorgeous, very old Church, a Mom & Pop Grocery/Deli that’s been there since the 1950’s and hasn’t changed much, some empty apartments above the storefronts, three bars, two restaurants, a Post Office and a Library.

There is ample parking in what is currently a HUGE empty field at then end of the street - Main Street could become a Walking Venue, no cars, but bikes and baby strollers allowed. And friendly dogs on-leash. :)

It could use a Sweets Shop/Ice Cream Parlor, a Coffee Shop/Bakery, an Art Gallery/Gift Shop, a Farmer’s Market on the weekends, a Christmas-All-Year Shop, a Fiber Arts shop, a Flower Shop, empty apartments above the storefronts could become a B&B, maybe turn the Library (just volunteer, not sanctioned) into a Book Store? Nice benches lining the sidewalks for sitting and chatting.

As you can see, I haven’t thought about this AT ALL, LOL!

My and I went to Julian to stay at a bed & breakfast for our anniversary in the late 90s. It was a quiet respite from the hustle and bustle of San Diego. We didn’t see crowds like that.

This is sad but not a surprise. 13 years ago I had to routinely wait in traffic at the intersection to get through town to go down the grade to Ocotillo Wells. Lots of RV and truck traffic has to go through Julian to get to the desert playground below

When I was in high school, late 1960’s, very early 70’s, my sinsimella dealer lived near Julian. He competed with a friend of ours from Fallbrook. Both had the best weed in California at the time. Most folks never even heard about “purple hairy” or knew how to grow polyploid flowers. And me and my friends had a monopoly on the pot trade for high school in La Canada / Flintridge. No one smoked dirt pot from across the border.

The simple economic solution to this supposed problem is-—

When DEMAND exceeds SUPPLY raise the PRICE.

ROBERT REDFORD This is perfect. Why didn't we think of it sooner? This town still has some charm left, not the mess we turned Park City into.

PHYLLIS Forgive me for being observant, but, won't we just end up doing the same thing to this town?

ROBERT REDFORD Yes. And the town after, and the town after that. Like termites, we will move this film festival from town to town until we have used it up. And then move on, until every quiet mountain town is like Los Angeles.

PHYLLIS Why? Why would we do such a thing?

ROBERT REDFORD Because we have to live in L.A. And if we can't live in quiet, simple, peaceful mountain towns, then nobody will! Waitwaitwait. Zoom in to a close-up of my face when I do that. Ready? Then NOBODY will! That's it.

Julian is a beautiful town. An artist/architect friend of mine lived there until he died this past year. His name was James Hubbel and he is famous for his huge sculpture creations that are around the world, including along the bay in San Diego.

He lost everything a few years ago with one of those huge California wild fires and rebuilt his home and studio. They turned his place into a National Historic site.

the human herd principle is powerful ... it’s even MORE powerful when amplified by social media ...

i personally saw it pre-internet when attending a conference of the National League of Cities in the Big Easy decades ago: word went around about a specific breakfast restaurant and it seemed like almost every conference attendee tried to eat there one morning ... total chaos ...
