Norwegian Cruise Line is alerting guests on Hawaii cruises in 2026 and beyond of the new Transient Accommodations Tax that levies an additional 14% on their cruise fare.
While the cruise line is part of the legal challenges to the new tax, it may be some time before any court cases are resolved and in the meantime the tax goes into effect from January 1, 2026.
Booked guests are reporting additional taxes on their cruise fares from $50-500 and higher, depending on the overall cost of their cruise and how much time their itinerary spends in Hawaii.
Norwegian Cruise Line has begun reaching out to guests booked on Hawaii cruises to alert them to increased tax payments. While guests aren’t pleased with the substantial fees, the cruise line is being forthright about the origin of the fee and what is being done to challenge it.

Was there some 30 years ago, yeah it was nice, but I wouldn't visit there again.
Never should have been a state.
Let’s see if the Dems who run the state can pull off the impossible task of causing tourists to stay away from a vacation paradise like Hawaii with massive new taxes and fees.
DOES IT ALSO APPLY TO PEOPLE WHO FLY THERE????
“Transient Accommodations Tax”
Trying to out Mamdani Mamdani
Me too. I vacationed twice in Hi years ago. I wasn’t blown away by the beaches, golf and certainly not the food. It was a very expensive vacation to boot. Long air flights. The only two memories I took away was renting a motorcycle and riding around Kauai and surfing lessons on Christmas day at Hanalei Bay.
Same with me. Once you’ve been there, forget going back. En route back to Alaska, the C-130 boys asked how many wanted to land at MIDWAY ISLAND to gas up. We were more excited about that than spending a week in Hawaii.
As I understand it Hawaii has no middle class.....either you have money or you’re dirt poor....and LOTS of crystal meth.
Personally, if I had the means i’d rather go to Tahiti or Bora Bora.
John Wick is the only one I know who can pull off an impossible task.
The clowns running that show in Hawaii are trying real hard, though.
Hawaii’s public officialdom is corrupt as hell. From top to bottom.
Some of it’s culture. Some of it’s the ChiComs.
Wonder if any of Kash Patel’s FBI would like to enjoy a bus man’s holiday in Hawaii.
The state needs a good clean out.
Rented a Harley and toured Kauai on it too.....loved Hawaii, stunningly beautiful, but no desire to hang out there or return.....
It applies to your hotel room.
Hawaii is an overpriced, over-commercialize shit hole. Was stationed there in the Navy. NEVER want to go back.
**Hawaii has no middle class.....either you have money or you’re dirt poor**
The po’ folk are native Hawaiians.
**Never should have been a state.**
Stir up the excrement by saying the state should return to a monarchy. The statehood/who should hold power issue will come to a head.
Not my first post on the issue. I’m thinking of 2 senators gone. Security issues would be easy as they know where their bread is buttered. Lotta churches there-works in our favor.
Hawaii and Vegas, into the dumpster
I assume this will hit AirBNB's as well. We are planning a family vacation for Dec. of 2026 in Hawaii. If this tax holds, we'll book somewhere else.
Taxes are going up everywhere.
By September 30th of next year revenues in Washington from the tariffs will reach 615 billion dollars or 1768 dollars and 26 cents per person.
“I assume this will hit AirBNB’s as well. We are planning a family vacation for Dec. of 2026 in Hawaii. If this tax holds, we’ll book somewhere else.”
Sounds like it was already there for B&Bs.
AirBnB has some pretty stiff (~15%) fees which it now hides.
I don’t know of any alternatives if you simply want to rent a room in someone’s home.
There are alternatives if you want to rent a whole apartment.
There are several accountants and engineers in the family who will weigh the cost of hotel rooms - and eating out in restaurants, vs. the cost of an AirBNB where we eat in more than not, which works especially well with kids.
Looks like hotel rooms are getting hit with the “new” tax as well. The government is trying to compensate for the ruinous fire in Maui - and the ensuing drop off in the lucrative tourist trade.
At one AirBNB we frequent, we became friends with the host and now pay her separately and privately to avoid all the fees AiBNB charges.
