AirBnB has some pretty stiff (~15%) fees which it now hides.
I don’t know of any alternatives if you simply want to rent a room in someone’s home.
There are alternatives if you want to rent a whole apartment.
There are several accountants and engineers in the family who will weigh the cost of hotel rooms - and eating out in restaurants, vs. the cost of an AirBNB where we eat in more than not, which works especially well with kids.
Looks like hotel rooms are getting hit with the “new” tax as well. The government is trying to compensate for the ruinous fire in Maui - and the ensuing drop off in the lucrative tourist trade.
At one AirBNB we frequent, we became friends with the host and now pay her separately and privately to avoid all the fees AiBNB charges.
