More cheese recalled by Oregon coast creamery due to listeria concerns

An Oregon coast creamery has recalled another batch of cheese products that may be contaminated with listeria.

Face Rock Creamery — which is headquartered in Bandon, Oregon, and operates a second cafe in Coos Bay — previously pulled two lots of garlic cheddar cheese curds in June. Now, the southwest Oregon creamery has issued a second recall for 16 units of its Vampire Slayer Cheddar Block, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The 6-ounce block was sold exclusively at Face Rock Creamery’s Oregon flagship, located at 680 Second St. S.E. in Bandon.

Affected units were sold between 3:30 p.m. Nov. 10 and 3:30 p.m. Nov. 13. They include a use-by date of Nov. 4, 2026, and the universal product code “8 512222 00547 8.”

As in June, Face Rock Creamery voluntarily recalled the product last week due to potential contamination with listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can lead to listeriosis.

Listeriosis, or listeria infection, can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions, as well as diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. It can cause miscarriages or premature delivery during pregnancy and can be fatal for people with weakened immune systems. It is treated with antibiotics.

Consumers should destroy the product or return it to its place of purchase for a full refund, per the recall. Those with questions can contact Face Rock Creamery at 541-347-3223 or by email at info@facerockcreamery.com.

Face Rock Creamery, which opened its Bandon flagship in 2013, has won several national awards over the past decade for its cheddar cheese products, including a first-place win at the American Cheese Society’s 2024 cheese competition.

Isn’t that always the way?.....a small business gets popular and the first thing to suffer is the quality of the product.

Now, the southwest Oregon creamery has issued a second recall for 16 units of its Vampire Slayer Cheddar Block, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Just make sure it's labeled for “For Use Against Vampires,” rather than “Vampire Slayer Treat,” and all should be fine.

The owner may be spread a little thin. He’s having some real estate developed in Coos Bay. 400+ homes in the $400K range.

Bandon cheddar was the best back in the 60s and 70s, way better than Tillamook, but then I think the factory closed down. I haven’t tried it since this other outfit took over.

I think Tillamook made an attempt at the original Bandon recipe. Pretty sure it’s marketed as “Bandon” cheese. Face Rock’s outlet store is down the street from the old factory.

It used to be a must-visit place when going through Bandon in the ‘70s. Now, gone. Same with West Coast Game Park. Run by druggies that neglected the animals.

I’ve seen Tillamook cheese and ice cream in Arizona stores, but none labeled Bandon.

Back in 1977/1978, when I was working in Gold Beach, I’d always stop in Bandon and get a few pounds of cheese and maybe some cheese curds whenever I went through.

Then there’s this....

Bandon cheese can probably be filed under “You can’t go home, again.”

I hadn’t seen that before. Doesn’t surprise me, though. The Tillamook Mafia pulls some shady stuff and has for a long time.

You’re right about the can’t-go-home-again thing, though. The Oregon I knew is long gone and not coming back.

I loved the garlic curds. Bought it every time I saw it at Costco. Then for the last year couldn’t find it there.
