We don't even have to look back that far. Just 35 years ago, Americans were still identifying themselves by the homeland of their ancestors. Today, they call themselves white because their ancestors intermarried with so many other people of European descent that they cannot trace their ancestry back to a single country. The term white has always been a subjective one, and "white" was never a culture. This country has always been a melting pot.

Have commercials ever reflected the demographics of the audiences they targeted? I remember when most ads centered on a white suburban family or a man paired with an improbably glamorous woman. Then I would step outside, look around, and see a world that looked nothing like those portrayals.

Drop the term white? Yeah, I agree. That term says nothing about a person's history, culture, or ancestry. Where I live, I've never met anyone who answered the question, "What are you?" with "white." Instead, they gave some country in Europe, or they gave the whole rundown (a quarter this, half that,...). lol
