One assumes that it was a lithium battery pack. If so, "Battery acid" did not spray across the area. modern Lithium (LiIon, LiPo, LiFe) batteries do not contain acid.

The electrolyte is usually an organic solvent. And there is not a whole lot of it in a battery so it is unlikely to spray very far or very much. (You wouldn't want to get it in your eyes, or leave it on your skin very long though.)

My cell phone had a “Halt, Melt and Catch Fire” error in my pocket about 10 - 15 years ago. Fortunately I was at home and could dump it without injury. Definitely a battery problem and the phone was old.
