Zohran Mamdani’s triumph has given socialists huge power in New York City. Now they must use it well—or see the ruling class crush them.
Zohran Mamdani’s election as mayor of New York City has thrust the US democratic socialist movement into the national spotlight. If Mamdani’s triumphant affordability platform—which includes plans to provide universal childcare by increasing taxes on high-income earners—is implemented, it could lead to a significant transfer of wealth from the wealthy elite to the working class and provide a blueprint for socialist leaders across the country. Equally, if Mamdani’s mission is stymied, the forces banking on his failure will use it as a weapon to try and banish the left everywhere. In other words, the stakes of a Mamdani mayoralty could not be higher. That’s why it’s so crucial for the left and progressive movements to adopt a mass politics orientation during Mamdani’s tenure, the 2026 midterms, and beyond.
Mamdani’s rise is partly due to the corporate elite’s failure to defend working-class New Yorkers against the city’s cost-of-living crisis. It’s also because corporate Democrats lacked a strategy to counter Mamdani’s left-wing populist economic message, which resonated with many New Yorkers who came to see themselves as renters and working people struggling with affordability because of the billionaire class.
Now, the movement behind Mamdani’s election is poised to stand up against the chaos fueled by Donald Trump’s policies, particularly those that have exacerbated economic inequality. The same strategy and message that worked so well for Mamdani can be used to challenge corporate Democrats in the midterms, holding them accountable for their inaction on the cost-of-living crisis and their failure to build a diverse coalition against authoritarianism.
Win the Affordability Agenda
The Mamdani campaign transformed the New York City electorate, tapping into long-ignored Muslim and...

Now they must use it well? Are you kidding me??
There’s not a chance in hell that can happen. By definition power will be abused.
F leftists. F communists
“Socialism is self-stymi-ing. The only issue is who gets the blame in the greater public’s mind. Blame is the big battle ahead.”
Bingo. That’s the future.
The same strategy .... can be used by any politician, right, left or center.
The economy’s performance under Trump and Republican Congress has been much better than under Biden.
Inflation......Better
Job growth ....Better (for Americans)
Wars overseas..Better
The list is long....but kept a secret from the voters in NJ and VA.
And what are we concerned about? Whether the Epstein files should be allowed to distract us from the real issues.
(If the Epstein files contain felonies that Pam Bondi can prosecute, then she should prosecute. But releasing files to the public in a case like this would so taint the jury that it would be impossible to convict anyone. And if the statue of limitations has run out...then its time to move on.)
Yes but power in the Supreme Court is limited as conservatives will sometimes side with the liberals - who will ALWAYS oppose just because.
Mossad
Yep. Real Snakes, all of them.
“The ruling class”. That means anyone who disagrees with the Left and socialism. We’re now all members of the “ruling class”.
The last time I saw something like this happen, was in the early sixties. The communists are taking advantage of the state of affairs in NYC to project their agenda, just like they used the VN war, the draft, and racial unrest to project that agenda in the sixties. Look at what they accomplished then..... the Dems/socialists kept control of government, and Johnson and Congress passed most of the social welfare programs that are still ruining this country today. We can’t afford to pay the revolutionaries off again.
So the MAYOR is allowed to MAKE law?
Dums
BINGO!
Yup. Jesus will allow you to express your anger, but...
Can't do anything about the supply, but the demand will, in the long run, take care of itself.
ME: list of 5 us cities that were very desirable 50 years ago, but have drastically fallen from favor these days
Then (1970s): The undisputed capital of the U.S. auto industry, booming with jobs, music (Motown), and middle‑class prosperity.
Now: Population has dropped from 1.5 million in 1970 to under 650,000 today. Widespread urban decay, abandoned neighborhoods, and financial crises have tarnished its reputation, though revitalization efforts are underway.
Then: A manufacturing powerhouse with steel and shipping industries, plus cultural institutions like the Cleveland Orchestra and Rock & Roll roots.
Now: Deindustrialization gutted jobs, population fell by more than half, and the city struggled with poverty and crime. Despite some downtown revival, it no longer holds the prestige it once did.
Then: A vibrant Midwestern hub with strong manufacturing, sports pride, and a growing suburban base.
Now: The city proper has lost over 60% of its population since 1950. High crime rates and economic stagnation have overshadowed its historic charm.
Then: A bustling port city with strong industry, shipping, and cultural identity.
Now: The collapse of manufacturing and persistent crime have eroded its desirability. Population has steadily declined, and many neighborhoods face blight, though the Inner Harbor remains a tourist draw.
Then: A Great Lakes powerhouse, fueled by steel, shipping, and proximity to Niagara Falls.
Now: Industry collapse led to massive job losses and depopulation. Buffalo has reinvented itself somewhat with healthcare and education, but it’s far from the booming city it was in the 1970s.
Which is only about 20% of the population!
I've no need to 'imagine', as I can REMEMBER!
And those that do not learn from it...
“It’s always sunny in Philadelphia”
About 10 miles Straight up
Socialism never goes well but socialists will always promise that the NEXT TIME it is tried, it will be wonderful. That is one of their biggest lies and stupid people always believe it.
Billionaire Socialist backers will float New York so it seems that Communism is working—Free this and free that. People will say—Look New York is working! The new mayor will take credit for it all—until the 2026 elections—then all will falter. The Democrat-Socialists will hope it will put them in power in the House and Senate. Then they can impeach Trump-Vance and put AOC as Speaker in the White House. They plan to reverse all things Trump as Biden did. They just might get away with it.
Seen the prices of new homes in todays market?
Copilot: Today, the average price of a new single‑family home in the U.S. suburbs is around $410,000–$420,000, with the national average sales price across all new homes closer to $512,800 as of mid‑2025
