Dick Cheney ‘just loved Israel,’ recalls former ambassador to Washington

Former US Vice President Dick Cheney “just loved Israel,” recalls Michael Oren, past Israeli ambassador to Washington.

Oren was in the room as an Israeli reservist in the 1991 Gulf War when Cheney, then defense secretary, and his counterpart Moshe Arens met to discuss the response to Iraqi Scud missile attacks on Israeli cities. He was the Israeli notetaker, as Cheney sought to convince Israel not to respond.

“The Israeli government was telling the administration that we couldn’t wait anymore, that the paratroopers were out on the runway ready to go to western Iraq,” says Oren.

Cheney feared that the US-backed coalition against Iraq would unravel as Israel joined the fight.

“It wasn’t like he was ordering Arens around at all,” he continues. “‘I understand your plight. I understand where you are. Please, please just give us tonight.’ He wasn’t muscling him at all; on the contrary.”

“I think that’s what persuaded the Israeli government not to intervene.”

The two remained in touch, and Cheney hosted a dinner in Oren’s honor when he began teaching at Georgetown University in 2008.

Cheney died Monday night due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family. He was 84.

If he liked Israel so much he should’ve appreciated Trump more.

Like anyone else, Dick Cheney had his good points and his bad points. However, being a key part of the Deep State for well over half of his adult life, I think that the bad points tend to overwhelm whatever good he might have done or expressed. To be honest, I used to admire him a lot, but that was before the war in Iraq began to lift the veil on who he really was, much less the political rise of Donald Trump. Trump drove, and continues to drive, everyone in the Deep State crazy because he hates them and what they have done to this country, and he is dismantling their power a quickly as he can (which I clearly think is a good thing).

Cheney was clearly (in my view) on the “Dark Side” for most things, but no one is wrong or bad all of the time, anymore than anyone is correct or good all of the time.

Cheney was being entirely practical.....he liked his position.

He knew that woe be to those pols who did not “like” Israel.
