84% of Gen Z women voted for Mamdani, only demographic to vote against socialist was white men

An overwhelming 84 percent of Gen Z women voted for socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in Tuesday’s election, while white men were the only demographic to vote against him.

According to NBC News exit polling, among women ages 18-29, 84 percent supported Mamdani. 67 percent of men in the same age group also voted for him. Overall, voters under 50 heavily backed Mamdani, while those over 50 broke for his opponent, former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Mamdani won across most demographics, leading among both men and women overall, as well as voters identifying as “very liberal,” 84 percent of whom supported him. The only racial group that leaned against Mamdani was white New Yorkers, who went 46 percent for Cuomo and 45 percent for Mamdani. White men in particular favored Cuomo 49 percent to 42 percent.

Income also appeared to play a role in voting patterns. Voters making under $30,000 leaned slightly toward Cuomo at 48 percent, while those earning between $30,000 and $300,000 largely supported Mamdani. Among voters earning over $300,000, 62 percent backed Cuomo.

Native New Yorkers were another group less favorable to Mamdani, with 49 percent of those born in the city voting for Cuomo. In contrast, those who have lived in New York City for fewer than five years overwhelmingly supported Mamdani at 85 percent.

Mamdani’s overwhelming support among young women comes despite his past statements about defunding the police, which could lead to increased crime. The socialist mayor-elect has been a controversial figure throughout the campaign, as his past rhetoric had included calls for abolishing the police, calling cash bail “racist,” referring to violent crime as an “artificial construction,” and advocating for the removal of the NYPD gang database.

Among those who said crime is a “major problem” where they live, 53 percent voted for Cuomo and 11 percent voted for Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Among those who said crime is “not a problem” for them, 68 percent voted for Mamdani.

I’m old enough to remember when women didn’t have children until they met and married a responsible man who wanted a family as well.
