Big news from my humble abode is that, so far, the tomato plant I brought inside is not only still alive; it’s even put forth a blossom! Two blossoms, actually. Holding my breath on this one. Glad I did a heavy clean-out of my one south-facing bedroom earlier in the year. :-)

Ours came in last Saturday. Lots of gunfire around our place, on the mountain & along the river. Hopefully, we’re far enough away not to be subject to stray bullets.

Rain & gray skies today so the overall look is gloomy. Mom needs to personally grocery shop & wants me to also do the Thanksgiving feast shopping at the same time. From previous experience, Saturday is not a good time to shop, but the agreement is she pays, I cook, so I’ll just have to deal with lots of people & narrow aisles.

Later today, after the rain ends, I need to rehang the decorative flag that blew off the tree & get the dead battery out of Little Red. Monday we plan on going to the ‘big city’ for a new battery, items our small Walmart & Food Lion don’t have, Aldi’s for various items, & to get my glasses worked on.

My turkey went from the freezer to the fridge Thursday. It is still hard as a rock today. I think I am moving it to mom’s fridge which is 5° warmer; otherwise, it won’t be thawed by Thursday. If it’s still not thawing well, I’ll have to work on it Wednesday with alternate thawing methods.

That cushion can be re-stuffed and given to a dog that APPRECIATES the finer things in life! :)

It was a $2 garage sale cushion. I'm pretty sure Howard appreciated it. It just needed a little bit of "adjustment" to be worthy of his awesomeness. lol

I've ordered a cushion that will properly fit the crate and is supposed to be "chew-resistant". We'll see about that.

It is duck (goose?) season here...and the dog is learning to tolerate the gunfire on the island near our property. Course, I am learning to put music with a beat on which confuses him into not caring, I think.

Grinders/stuffers have a sizing system for the cutting discs with #5, #8 and #12 being common. Stuffer tubes are made to match those sizes. Looks like #5 will do the trick. About 2-1/8 to 2-1/4".

That means I don't have to wait for a vintage Oster grinder/stuffer tube to show up on ebay or worry about not being able to find mine. Got a pair of replacement Cabella grinder tubes on the way. Small one for breakfast links, snack sticks and small dia hot dogs. Medium one for large dogs, brats and up to Kielbasa size.

Neither I or AI seems to be able to figure out what the #5, #8 or #12 pertain to other than "standard" meat grinder disc sizes. Sometime those old number systems can equate to increments like each # = 1/4" or something, where #8 = 2".

I think rebar is based on 1/8" where #4 = 4/8 or 1/2" and #5 = 5/8.

Doesn't seem to be the case with discs though. Meanwhile --

And no, a #8 plate will not fit any brand. Some discs have and indent or two to keep them from rotating. Some have a tab or two sticking out. There are different thicknesses as well. Maybe it was different back in the day or maybe things are more standard with commercial products.

None of the above applies to a piston/pusher style stuffer. They don't need to worry about sizing things to a rotating disc.

Qiviut. I have been hearing repeated warnings since last Friday to get frozen Turkeys thawing in the refrigerator or miss thanksgiving! That and warnings that under no circumstance should you try to thaw/cook a partially frozen bird in a deep fryer unless you want an explosive accident and a trip to the emergency room and possibly some expensive skin grafts!

I have cooked thanksgiving dinner in the past. Here is something I just read from noted poultry rancher Martha Steward about covering your turkey with cheesecloth soaked in butter and white wine when you roast. (Since my Daughter has decided she wants to sponsor thanksgiving I do not know if I will be cooking thanksgiving dinner again. I will try this if I do!)

https://www.marthastewart.com/353184/perfect-roast-turkey

" Why Use Cheesecloth on a Turkey?

"Cheesecloth is both absorbent and porous, making it the ideal material to hold in moisture and keep the basting liquid in constant contact with the turkey. The cheesecloth shields the skin from the direct heat of the oven so it doesn’t brown faster than the meat cooks, but unlike foil, cheesecloth allows evaporation and air circulation so the turkey roasts rather than steaming. "

You remove the cheesecloth the last 30 minutes to allow browning.

My Thanksgiving leftover sandwich, if I can get one, has turkey, stuffing, and homemade cranberry sauce on it. On sourdough or focaccia.

Augie. No hail here on Monday. Drizzle, dark and some good showers this week. Had the front lawn mowed so that was good. Have had some sort of Upper Respiratory Infection most of the last 2 weeks. Wednesday I went to the Dentists and had a Temporary Crown put in...good, since no root canal, And that afternoon went to the doctor/N.P. and got a prescription for Prednisone so maybe I can clear this up.

Sunny today and looked out at the garden. The Turnips seem pretty happy and we will not have another freeze until next Wednesday! I do not think I will cover them this time. They are larger and I am on a hill top.

I am starting to make sourdough. Mrs. is happy with it and I can avoid the bleached flour. (Bromine...bad for the gut and the thyroid.)

Stuffing on bread...coals to Newcastle? : )
