Government Shutdowns and Economic Pain
American Thinker ^ | 31 Oct, 2025 | John F. Di Leo

Democrats want the entire economy to take a hit.

The federal government has been shut down for a month now.

The leftists primarily responsible for it.

The Democrat minority in the U.S. Senate – are hoping that, politically, the pain inflicted by this shutdown will net out to be a political benefit to the Democratic Party.

Will it?

We don’t really know. You don’t find out for sure where the political fallout landed until long after an event is over, when future elections, long term polling results, and the historians have all had their say.

But there are two groups we are expected to look at first:

First, the federal employees. Hundreds of thousands of government employees – not all of them, but a lot of them – are going without paychecks.

Some of them have savings just for this sort of occurrence, so they were ready for it, and they’re confident that in the end, their pay will be restored retroactively. That’s how it’s always been before, after all, though this is a very new and different year.

But what of the others – the hundreds of thousands of government employees who didn’t have savings to cover such a long shutdown, who can certainly handle food bills for a few weeks but are now falling behind on rent or mortgage, car loans and insurance, utilities and tuition? Every day that goes by gets rougher for them.

And second, the people on assistance – people dependent on SNAP cards and other federal largesse in what’s generally referred to as “the safety net” of our massive welfare state. As food stamps go unreplenished, and housing, cellphones, cable, and other dependencies of all kinds go unfunded, there are millions of recipients getting more worried by the hour.

It is performance theater by the left. They think they can twist the narrative to benefit themselves.

The demoncraps could turn the spigot back on today, but they are the Party of No.

The feckless GOP has been weak in their messaging - yes I know the MSM is rigged against them - but it's a simple message: "We have a bill to feed you but, the demoncraps won't let you eat."

My school district offers free breakfast and lunch for all students regardless of income. The SNAP allowances are very generous, and more than I have spent per month on my own family with my own earned money.

Schools also provide food-filled backpacks on the weekends and summer feeding programs open to all children and teens under 18 years of age.

There should be no problem feeding families on the existing SNAP benefits with money left over.

I can only conclude that the SNAP benefits are being sold for cash by the recipients.

I was in a car conversation with a very successful retired businessman. He segued the conversation into a lecture about Trump’s over spending on the White House instead of using the money on “benefits.” I made no response, and he changed the subject back to cars in another awkward transition.

The point is, this otherwise well-informed guy had bought into some narrative where Trump was somehow responsible for the current shutdown. Somehow Trump was spending like a drunken sailor and everyone else was suffering. King Trump, in other words.

I try to never get involved in conversations with people who see such a different view of reality because they KNOW they are right and no number of facts will dissuade them. The reality is a percentage of the people who vote have no idea how things work or who did what to whom.

I would estimate that that percentage of people would be a bit over 50%.

Economic Pain is coming from many areas from inflation, Trump tariffs, devaluation of the US Dollar, massive layoffs, stagnate job markets, collapse of credit markets...This is the Trump Economy.

'The federal government has been shut down for a month now. '

Sounds like a dream, now people are whining? Has not the gop ran on less gov? I recall the days of tea party bros railing at government spending, I know they don't care anymore, but its nice to think that we can do more with less.

I’ve had conversations with my wife about the parallels between the desperation of the democrats in 2020, when Trump was cruising to re-election, and their response to covid and the current government shutdown obstinance.

This is just a hail-mary ploy, just like the over-the-top response to covid and the george floyd riots.

They are willing to destroy the country, literally and figuratively, for power. That’s all there is to it.

The Rats are NEVER going to get a $1.5 trillion gift for healthcare to illegal aliens. That money for illegals is what they want in return for voting to end the shutdown.

The Rats care NOTHING about American citizens. This is the message that needs to be put out by Trump and all Republicans.

End the filibuster.

Trim back the welfare system.

Cede Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside (west of Palm Springs) and San Diego Counties of Southern California back to Mexico. Put most Owens Valley and Colorado River water to agricultural use and charge dearly for the rest and use the money to pay on the national debt.

Offer the San Francisco Bay area (except the vineyard region) to the Republic of China. If refused, cede it to Mexico. Charge for Sierra Nevada water to help pay the national debt.

Cede the Democratic southern tip of Texas back to Mexico.

The Commander-in-Chief probably needs to allow lower level commanders to grant compassionate financial leave to non-nuclear, non-vessel military personnel.

“It is performance theater by the left. They think they can twist the narrative to benefit themselves.”

No, I don’t think so. They want to damage the economy, and make it look like Trump is failing. They don’t care who they hurt or kill, just want to ‘prove’ that Trump’s policies are bad for the nation so they can be relevant. If Trump is correct about the economy and the deficit, and he can stabilize or improve both, as well as make peace, secure the border, make us safer, what would be the Democrats platform?

The Democrats have tried to have a ‘big Tent’ and include many diverse people to attempt to keep in power. If Trump succeeds, then people will gravitate to the winner—much like soldiers follow victory on the battlefield. What would be left under the ‘tent’ will be people with TDS and deviants, criminals, illegals, and it will be a ‘Big Circus Tent’.

“Economic Pain is coming from many areas from inflation”

Gasoline, milk and eggs have come down in price a lot. Those are frequent purchases.

We can wait on most Chinese chattel purchases.

Government is not shutdown. Political government at the federal level is.

Governments functioning in the US include portions of the federal government, all state governments, all county governments, all municipal governments and smaller entities like school boards.

The tiny nation of Belgium went through a political shutdown quite like this one, twice. The longest stretched to 589 days.

The Democrat / media hype that GOVERNMENT is shutdown is simply incorrect.

Some government is. As the Trump-Vance administration shut down a portion of government like USAID, one found that agency was involve din all sorts of improper and wasteful acts worldwide, courtesy of Democrats. This isn't much different.

Basically the left is using shut downs to extort more money and power from the citizens and is willing cut off food supplies to radicalize millions of shock troops and cripple the economy. These guys would make the Mafia blush.

from my health care finance plan:

HOSPITAL EMTALA COST ASSISTANCE

I would allow hospitals collect up to $1,000 per incident of EMTALA service from employers, with payment not in excess of $50 per week per employee concerned being due to any and all EMTALA providers and not for more than 100 weeks after service. Such payments on behalf of an employee would be considered to be a debt of the employee to the employer. Employers could collect back from employees and ex-employees (and require EMTALA incident employees to participate in an employer plan).

NOTE: My plan gets the hospitals paid, the invaders care, and sometimes zings the employers not providing insurance (or using E-verify).

NOTE: The Arbeitgeber can get the $50/week from an employee if the Arbeitgeber gives the employee enough work.

hospital - paid
employee/employee’s child - care provided
legal (and most scofflaw) employees - ultimately pay
scofflaw employers - sometimes ultimately pay
