On October 8, 2025, an 82-year-old woman was attacked by an Asiatic black bear in the city of Daisen in Akita Prefecture, Japan. The attack was caught on video. The bear is presumed to be an Asiatic black bear because the brown bears (Ursus Arctos) in Japan are limited to the northern island of Hokkaido. Daisen and Akita prefectures are not in Hokkaido. Akita prefecture is on the largest of the Japanese islands, Honshu. Honshu has a significant population of Asiatic black bears.
From the bear’s actions, it appears to be a juvenile bear that has not yet perfected its hunting technique. The woman seems to hear the bear and turn toward it just before the running bear reaches her. The bear misses solid contact, only managing to claw the woman’s face before overshooting its mark. The woman is screaming, and after another abortive attempt at a take-down, the bear retreats. This is typical prey-testing behavior for bears. The bear does not go very far, but a passing driver rescues the woman. She gets into the left passenger seat and they drive off. She was taken to the hospital.

Even Japan’s bears are skinnier than ours.
The dogs that hunt the smaller Japanese Asiatic bears there are called Akitas and this is one reason you should own one if you live there. And if you die first when owning one, they'll also wait for you at the train station for years until they die.
Makes sense to me. The bears that attack humans have mostly been killed off and the the offsprings of the ones left rarely attack humans.
A die5 of rice’ll do that to a being
The asiatic bear iw known to be more aggressive i b3l3ive
Obviously, not being told the war was over, the bear mistook her for a US Marine and attacked. Upon realizing its error it broke off the attack.
Poor bears!
Alternate explanation:
5.2 million people live in Hokkaido, 740,000 people in Alaska.
Bears live further away from people in the U.S.
Hokkaido is roughly the size of Ireland.
There is a reason they killed off the last bear in the UK back in 400 AD... It was so that the bears wouldn’t eat them.
Eat or be eaten... That’s an axiom to live by.

She will probably live another 20 years.
The Japanese credit a decreasing human population for the increase in bear attacks.
In the USA, people credit an increasing human population for the increase in bear attacks.
There are many variables, so it is hard to be certain of exactly what is most important.
We were in Tokyo back in May and unfortunately the Hachiko statue was walled off because of all the construction going on around Shibuya station. I love that story, and it just shows why dogs are the best animals on the planet.
Could be because we humans in the USA will carry a gun when we’re in bear country.
Could be.
"Bears are hunted much more regularly in the USA than in Japan. Japan has one of the lowest rates of firearms ownership in the world, while the USA has the highest rate of firearms ownership in the world."
