Senate Republicans considering bill to keep SNAP benefits flowing amid the shutdown

Senate Republicans are discussing voting on a bill that would prevent millions of low-income Americans from losing access to food aid on Nov. 1.

The bill from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) would fund Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for the duration of the shutdown, which on Wednesday entered its 22nd day. The Department of Agriculture warned earlier this month that if the government shutdown dragged on “there will be insufficient funds to pay full November SNAP benefits for approximately 42 million individuals across the Nation.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said in a brief interview that senators were discussing “some options,” though nothing had been scheduled yet.

“Discussing” is what Congress does

Politically this is a great move..

Democrats are boxed in.

Democrats want the chaos of the shutdown, but if Republicans piece meal the spending and force democrats to vote individually on things like this what are Democrats going to do?

They either vote for it, or vote it down and see their base go insane for not getting their food stamps and everyone will know they are why they aren’t getting them .

Good post. It makes me wonder if most of the GOP actually agrees with Rand Paul and doesn’t really want the CR to pass.

I agree, politically it is a good move. Make the Democrats vote against benefits for the needy

No, they don't agree with Rand Paul.

The Dems need to do their duty and vote open the government. They're hurting their own constituents. Just plain stupid.

“I’d love to know where Freepers stand on this one!”

Pass the bill only to see what happens in the Senate.

If the Senate dems kill it... it’s another nail.

Allowing the dems to continue withering on the vine by not funding the illegal-alien benefit package futhers the notification that the DNC continues as the party supporting Illegals, criminals, hamass and Marxists.

Good point as usual. Seems like Congress has to make a stark choice

Its got to happen sooner or later .... They will find a way to punt it, though.

Welfare is immoral and unconstitutional.

Charity is voluntary and pleasing to God. Welfare is using the coercive power of govt to rob one for the benefit of another. It is unconstitutional because it is unequal treatment, which violates equal-protection.

Force the democrats to vote on record on:

1. Paying the military
2. Paying essential federal employees
3. Continuing SNAP benefits

Dare them to vote against it. It’s win-win.

Giantmart ‘Free’ Food Line

Just show us your SNAP card and then get in line.

Line & Aisle A: Your choice, one per person:
a can of veggies
a pound of pasta
a loaf of short-dated bread
a chicken breast

Line & Aisle B: Your choice, one per group of at least two:
a carton of 12 eggs
a gallon of milk
a box of store brand cereal

Stores could write down how much was given out each day and seek government reimbursement.

However angry you are, you're not angry enough. Listen to these ghettopotami saying it's the taxpayer's job to feed them.

Breaking up the budget into separate bills for each funded program is a good idea. No more holding the entire government hostage to appease minority factions.

Let the Democrats stand or fall by the individual programs that they support.

The Republicans need to do something to generate good PR and put the Dems on the defensive. If a bill to keep food stamp benefits flowing is it, so be it. The GOP is real good at doing nothing until a ton of bad publicity forces them to cave in. They should do this.
