US lawmakers urge Trump to scrap $100K H-1B visa fee hurting startups

Seven US lawmakers, including both Democrats and Republicans, have written to President Donald Trump and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, urging them to withdraw the $100,000 fee on H-1B visas. They warned that the recent changes could harm the country’s innovation-driven economy and weaken its global competitiveness.

In a joint statement, they said that while the H-1B visa system needs reform to better align with American values and workforce needs, the new rules — particularly the $100,000 annual fee — will make it difficult for many employers to hire and retain skilled foreign workers.

The letter was signed by Suhas Subramanyam, the son of Indian immigrant parents, along with several other members of the US Congress, including Sam T Liccardo, Jay Obernolte, María Elvira Salazar, Don Bacon, and Greg Stanton.

Maybe POTUS Trump raises it to $125,000 since they wish to waste his time.

As someone who has a startup do you want to hire talent to do the development at a bargain price? Or do you want to entice talent with stock options? That’s the issue.

Now, downstream, years after the startup has succeeded, the Indians will go home and start their own competing enterprises. The Americans, now wealthy, will start their own companies employing yet more Americans. Which is the outcome that’s better for America?

Good idea. Scrap the 100K and make it 300K!

The general consensus amongst lobbiests is that the H1B crackdown will not be an issue for very long. Status quo will return.

I agree. The objective of Trump’s H1B crack down is to induce India to stop buying Russian oil. He might relent. As a retired IT worker though, I love it. It is not generally recognized how Indians depress IT wages. Indians pushed me to retire.

I wonder what percentage of foreign workers are actually better than any US citizen they could hire? I think it’s much more about cheaper than better. The 100K fee eliminates that factor.

Good. That’s the intent. Hire and retain American workers.

You know what doesn’t hurt startups - hiring AMERICAN workers!

Most of these startups are probably nothing more than schemes set up by the left to bring in more invaders. They’re trying every trick in the book to get rid of white people of European descent, and they can’t do that without importing hordes of invaders first.
