Greedy waitress chases down customer and calls cops because he didn't tip her: 'Who said he's obligated to tip?'

Tipping culture in the US appears to have become so extreme that some staff now think that customers who do not leave a gratuity are breaking the law.

At least, that's what some restaurant workers seem to think, judging by a viral video this week that shows a dramatic confrontation between employees and a customer.

The clip has reignited a broader debate over whether tipping in America has spiraled out of control, raising questions about 'tipflation,' social pressure, and the expectations placed on diners.

It shows the tense aftermath after a man allegedly left a restaurant without tipping his wait staff.

According to the post, the bartender and server chased after the customer, even blocking his car with their vehicles, demanding he 'tip properly.'

The clip shows the visibly shaken man stepping out of his beat-up Honda as the two workers confront him.

'What do I do?' he asks, while his children, including a baby, sit inside the car.

One of the staff filming the scene can be heard saying, 'My brother's a cop, you gotta go back there now, bro. Seriously.'

If it's that bad then don't work at a job that you rely on tips.

Waitresses make $2 an hour and you’re not obligated to tip ever.

Unfortunately, some groups are known to typically not tip or tip no more than $2 a person whatever they order. Then when the waitresses don’t want to take those tables here comes Jessie Jackson for the shakedown. (This happened to Denny’s.)

My solution was to leave a tip, but just two cents, especially for waitresses who mouthed off to me for some reason.

I might add, the worst waitress I ever experienced was one who dumped a basket of French fries in my friend’s lap, and didn’t even bother to apologize. And no, she got no tip.

Happened to me once at the Blue Note...only time I ever went. Left a tip on the credit card receipt then was confronted out front, guy said I didn’t leave a tip. I straightened him out with a few choice words.

Tips are out of control. Every time you buy coffee or anything else over the counter with a card there is a screen asking you whether you want to give 15, 20, or 25%. For what? I generally tip well, but I am tired of paying someone’s wages that they should be getting from their employer.

Back in the day when the waitress/waiter was rude we would do something called “flipping a cup” We would get a bunch of change and put it in the water glass. we would take the plastic signs on the table, usually advertising a fancy desert like Shoney’s Hot fudge cake if anyone here knows about that, and put the plastic car over the cup. We would then flip the cup quickly and place it on the table and pull the plastic card out. It would form a vacuum holding the water and coins in the cup. The only way to get the coins out was to pull up the cup which was a big old mess.

before the fake china virus, only waiters at a sit down restaurant and pizza delivery drivers got tips.

Now there are tip cups and tips added to electronic checkout screens everywhere you go.

I’m sick of it too that is why I posted this. The man just wanted dinner for his family but couldn’t afford to tip. It’s not his job to pay her wages it’s the restaurants.

I just get take out and say I’d rather eat at home on my bed while watching TV. Truth be told I’m sick of what tipping has become.

The Amish!

Tipping is out of control though. Went to a bowling alley and it had a ‘tip question’ on the checkout system. To bowl?

There are waiters and even parking vallets making high five and low six figures in tips (cash). Nice gig! These are high-end restaurants and hotels.

Know a girl with a social work degree who got her masters and decided she was better off waitressing than taking the pay cut. “No tax on tips” has made that an even easier decision.

Tipping is out of control. In the ‘80s (when I first started paying for my own meals), a proper tip was 10% before taxes, more if the service was beyond expectation. Now, it 18 to 20%, and when the put their tip suggestions on their receipts or touch screens, it includes tax in the estimate.

Frankly, I would love to get rid of the tipping system. Just bake it into the price of goods and services, and pay the employees salary plus commission on sales.

I used to own a hotel with several bars and restaurants and all of our servers depended on tips to make a living but they knew that they needed to earn them.

We never had a problem with our wait staff and tipping {that came to my attention}.

Those were different {more civil} days when people didn't walk around with their heads buried in a computer and actually talked with each other.

Because of my past experience, I tend to tip high, but if the service is lousy or the server has an attitude, I'll make it a point to tell the manager why I didn't leave a tip.

I think I'm doing the server a favor by doing that {although they won't agree}.

If it’s required, it’s not a gratuity.

As a general rule, I will only not tip servers who are intentionally rude; a server who is polite and really trying, but is just inept, will get a pretty good tip. That’s just the grandfather in me.
