Wirt’s statement was read into the record as the basis on which he would be interrogated. Because it deserves deep and detailed study much of it is reproduced here. The techniques Wirt was told would be used to discredit business, to entice labor, management, school officials, and farmers to ‘go along’ are frighteningly similar to those which have been used in the ensuing 30 years. Wirt stated:
“Brain Trusters” insist that the America of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln must first be destroyed so that on the ruins they will be able to construct an America after their own pattern. They do not know that the America of Washington, Jefferson, and Lincoln was the real New Deal for the common man. They wish to put the common man back into the feudal society of the Dark Ages. (Hearings, House Select Committee To Investigate Certain Statements of Dr. William Wirt, 73rd Congress, 2nd Session, April 10 and 17, 1934)
Wirt’s statement as read into the record of the public hearing continued:
I was told they believe that by thwarting our then evident economic recovery they would be able to prolong the country’s destitution until they had demonstrated to the American people that the Government must operate business and commerce. By propaganda they would destroy institutions making long-term capital loans—and then push Uncle Sam into making these loans. Once Uncle Sam becomes our financier he must also follow his money with control and management. (ibid.)
Today, the Federal Government is very much in the business of making long term capital loans through the Area Redevelopment Administration, Small Business Administration, the Rural Electrification Administration, Export-Import Bank, Federal Land Banks, the various housing agencies, and dozens of other departments large and small.

It won't be long.
The peasant serfs under feudalism paid on 20 percent taxes, and we think we are smarter.
Wirt (not to be confused with the early 19th century William Wirt) began as a progressive but came to oppose FDR. There was some truth in what he said, but he claimed to have actually uncovered a real conspiracy at work, when it’s very unlikely that he had. His supposed sources denied telling him what he claimed they did. Also, after WWII the common man was riding high and not put back into the feudal society of the Dark Ages. Whatever’s been going on lately, his prediction did not come true for years to come.
Had to look it up:

St FDR of Marx failed to get the universal disarmament he so craved.
It was a very, very hard time for almost everyone. Here’s an authoritative history.

That alone is enough to know that things were tough.
Thank you X. This _is_ actually “my thing”.
Unfortunately, I do not know nearly as much about the New Deal era as I do the Progressive Era given that nearly everything that can be originally sourced is behind a firewall of copyright. (Unless you get lucky and accidentally find something that is out of copyright)
I have been wanting for a while to begin a new audio book over at LibriVox from one of Rexford Tugwell’s written works since he has 2 that are prior to the public domain line. Just haven’t gotten there yet.
We’re about 5 years away from the first few years of the New Deal(32-35) entering the public domain. We have a lot to learn.
In that one line.... wow, that is a whopper. It is correct; and its the kind of thing most people of a political nature are afraid to confront.
Why did the progressives hate Liberal America so much?
Whatever you do, don't purchase any books.
It is my opinion that most of the material on the Internet was originated by someone who didn't know the material at depth; and, then it is propagated millions of times as enlightenment.
The only source that goes into any depth and is well researched is that found in books, particularly older ones.
In the big picture The American Revolution was he beginning of the overthrow of the ancient régime of the rule by Kings and warlords. To counter the Revolution they came up with socialism which leads to communism which in turn leads to hereditary dictators who are kings and warlords. North Korea and Cuba are examples.
Political control and leadership by heredity is what you’re really saying. The Founders rejected it, having seen it in Europe.
It’s part of why I say no more Kennedys. No more Bushes. No more Carters. No more Trumps (even though I like DTJ well enough).
Was the Communist Party founded in 1912; and was the Communist Party's founding Father Theodore Roosevelt?
If these questions carry the answer of "no", then what characterizes differences between progressivism and socialism?

You have a very good point. A number of very bad ideals became acceptable in the government and general society. Income tax, central banking, welfare state to name a few of the really bad ones.
But a number of good ideals also came about too. Anti-Trust laws were good but have since been weakened to the point of none existence today. The 5 day 40 hour work week, universal traffic rules, the ‘Melting Pot’, potable water and sewer systems are some of the big ones.
