Trump in tense meeting with Zelensky as pair clash over Putin's intentions and Ukraine demands Tomahawk missiles
Daily Mail ^ | 13:29 EDT, 17 October 2025 | Updated: 14:38 EDT, 17 October 2025 | NIKKI SCHWAB, CHIEF CAMPAIGN CORRESPONDENT and ELINA SHIRAZI, US SENIOR POLITICAL REPORTER and ROSS

Ukrainian President Zelensky delivered a pointed rebuke to Donald Trump's assessment of the war in Ukraine on Friday, insisting Vladimir 'Putin doesn't want peace' even as the American president continued to express confidence a resolution was in sight.

'We want peace, Putin doesn't want peace. That's why we need pressure on him,' Zelensky said, underscoring Kyiv's call for stronger US support.

At the same meeting, Trump said he believed Putin wants to finish the war.

'I think President Putin wants to end the war, or he wouldn't be talking this way,' Trump said.

Later in questions with reporters, Trump said he was concerned about being played by Putin.

'I have been played all my life by the best of them,' Trump acknowledged, a signal of his lingering reticence with Putin following a long conversation with the Russian leader on Thursday.

Zelensky start off his part of the speech celebrating Trump's success in the Middle East and saying that the momentum for peace in Europe is strong, and that Russia's defense forces are losing strength.

'I am confident with your help that we can stop this war. We see that they do not have success on the battlefield, they are weaker now,' Zelensky said.

"'We want peace..."

That's why we keep attacking Russia, and why we need Tomahawk missiles so we can attack them even further into the country, and why we need billions more dollars to continue to wage war, because after all, we want peace.

It’s way past time to cut the Green Goblin loose. This is the EU’s war - let them fund it and manage it. The U.S. needs to be out of this.

Trump is being forced to walk a delicate line here, since Z-man is just full of himself and both know the only one who can actually end this war is Putin.

What exactly would be the downside of Zelensky surrendering?

If you think he’d be replaced in a coup and the replacement would be more militarily aggressive . . . so what? This would not threaten the world. And with them having surrendered, what could the replacement do?

In contrast, a replacement of Putin with more hardline people, willing to make an example of Kiev with a nuclear weapon, thus revealing all the risks to the entire planet . . . which scenario poses less risk to the world?

Volodymoort still hasn’t learned his lesson. You don’t get on Trump’s good side by getting on his bad side.

From the article:

“Zelensky called for a ceasefire and indicated openness to negotiations in any format, but stressed the need for ‘strong security guarantees.’ While NATO membership remains his goal, he suggested a bilateral US-Ukraine defense pact could be a viable alternative”.

This man should not receive another dollar, and should be prevented from entering the US again.

“What exactly would be the downside of Zelensky surrendering?”

For the US it’s nothing but upside.

3 and a half years and Putin can’t take Ukraine. Putin is bombing hospitals and schools. Ukraine has almost ended the flow of gasoline in Russia. Ukraine kicked the Russian fleet out of Crimea. Russia is using horses and donkeys for transport.

And you want Ukraine to give up? LOL. You are not wanting Russia to give up so you must be a Russian BOT. And all you can do now is attack me and not defend your position. LOL.

I’m sorry but comments like this are delusional. The result of Putin actually conquering Ukraine would be catastrophic. Something on the order of 100 times the negative effect of the Afghan debacle. A previous debacle which by the way caused the Ukraine invasion.

I support Trump and he wants to see the war end. But believing that Russia should achieve the surrender of Ukraine is pretty much International suicide.

Absolute gibberish unsupported by a single fact.
