Climate activists from "Futuro Vegetal" threw red paint on historic painting of Christopher Columbus at the Naval Museum of Madrid to stop global warming or something.
The painting, by 19th-century artist José Garnelo, is titled "First Tribute To Christopher Columbus" and depicts the explorer landing in the Americas with a Christian cross.
EuroNews reports the two liberal women were arrested.
Police sources reported that both women were arrested for a crime against heritage after being detained by a museum worker until authorities arrived.
Visitors were evicted during the intervention but hours later, the Navy announced on its social networks that the painting had been restored and that the work was once again on display.
The rapid restoration of the canvas allowed not only the painting to be recovered, but also part of the serenity of the space that surrounds it.

The activists unfurled a banner reading 'October 12, nothing to celebrate. Ecosocial justice.' Futuro Vegetal said the act denounced the 'extractive neocolonialism' that continues to exploit Indigenous lands and natural resources.

Even a statue of Caligula has value, if only to remind us of who he was and what he did, having too much power.

Leftists are no better than Islamists when it comes to culture. Everything of cultural value ought to be protected with shatterproof glass.
Let’s hope it was latex or tempera paint. Easier to remove entirely without disturbing oil paint underneath.
Not sure that's warranted; but I recall when rioters tried to rope and pull over the Andrew Jackson statue across from the White House during Trump 45, he passed a law promising a 10-year sentence for attacks against cultural monuments. The statue-pulling stopped almost completely.
In the 90s I visited this museum and it didn’t even looks like a museum from the outside but inside … Wow! Artifacts from everywhere and the Aztec stuff was jaw dropping. But more recently they moved to a new spot and did the trendy “pit outside copies of some things and hide everything else in storage” so , bummer.
