A former maintenance worker says he once used a garden hose to prevent a potential explosion at the Tennessee bomb factory that was obliterated Friday in a mystery blast that likely killed 18 people.
Greg McRee, 44, was hailed a hero in 2020 after dousing flames shooting from an industrial chimney at Accurate Energetic Systems (AES).
His quick thinking, according to colleagues, stopped the fire from reaching a nearby stockpile of TNT boosters and blowing the building sky high.
But instead of being rewarded, McRee says he was dismissed days later from his $28-an-hour supervisor job at the sprawling munitions plant in McEwen, 70 miles west of Nashville.
‘On Friday afternoon I was a hero. On Monday morning I was told I was a piece of c**p and a failure,’ the married dad-of-three told the Daily Mail in an exclusive interview.
‘By Wednesday I had been terminated. It was wrong.’
The exact same building – known as the Melt Pour - was the epicenter of a devastating blast last week that left 18 workers missing and shook homes and businesses within a 20-mile radius.
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis warned Saturday there was virtually zero chance of locating survivors among the smoldering ruins.
Authorities are identifying the dead from DNA, Davis said, adding: ‘It’s a tremendous loss, a great loss.
’McRee was friendly with several of the workers who likely perished in the disaster which is being investigated by the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
‘What can you say or do to make it better, nothing,’ he said. ‘I feel terrible for the families.’

‘By Wednesday I had been terminated. It was wrong.’
By Thursday I would have been filing OSHA complaints like it was my full time job.
I wouldn’t want to be management there after this gets out.
What is the rest of the story?
What you want to bet an inexperienced person was given his job?
I’ve said several times that our infrastructure and essential institutions will fail because those that “can” are being fired for those that “can’t” due to DEI practices. DEI actually kills.
Or just to hire someone cheaper.
To work at a place like that(a place that builds explosives)you got to be crazy and desperate for a job, having said that the management was probably crazy.
For sure. Pretty short on details.
No, it was the center.
The epicenter is the point on the ground above the underground focus of an earthquake.
Yeah ... they were DEI before it was called DEI.
Now they're DEAD.
RIP to the deceased employees.
RIH to the management if, as it seems, they created an unsafe workplace.
I’m calling official bs on this guy. He probably started the fire. 🔥
He was fired for fighting the fire. There were signs all over that said ‘do not fight explosive fires'.
My guess is he probably talked to a reporter about putting the fire out and AES didn't like that.
***********************************************************
On a line from the center of the earth through the center of the earthquake. I hate the misuse/overuse of "epicenter."
Dousing flames shooting from an industrial chimney at Accurate Energetic Systems (AES).
OSHA looking for records will call back later much later.
With a lot of TNT, you can safely bet your last dollar that there WAS and earthquake.
Or to hire a family member.
On the other hand, if any foul play was involved the first person they will look at is someone recently fired.
That's quite a stretch between disgruntled and mass murderer. I'd like to know why signs saying ‘do not fight explosive fires' were posted all around when the alternative is trying to outrun the out-runnable - IF you had a warning and time to respond to it.
I've seen specials about fireworks manufacturers (only slightly less dangerous) showing how their redundant safeguards make safe working environments. Hopefully this site's obliteration doesn't make proper investigation impossible.
DEI and lower wages for new hires.
You probably pick on writers who use “decimated” incorrectly, too. Right?
Now I’m not picking on you because you are right and I do the same thing. As Rush used to famously say, “words have meanings.”
