Diethylene glycol (DEG) is an organic compound that is commonly used as an industrial solvent in antifreeze mixtures and brake fluids. But, in India, DEG is ending up with worrying frequency where it should never be – in cough syrups for children.
The repeated presence of this toxic substance in medicines has had devastating, fatal consequences in India and abroad, while also bringing the country’s lax drug regulatory set-up under intense scrutiny.
In the latest instance of such contamination, at least 22 children have been killed since September in the Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan after consuming Coldrif, a cough syrup adulterated with industrial grade DEG.

Yes indeed. My sister is now blind in one eye after using — only once! — over-the-counter eyedrops made in India. She was lucky to keep the use of the other eye.

I don’t know if it was that very company, Marcus. The entire episode caused a huge stir here in the U.S., with many people losing their eyesight (and even their eyes) entirely. That stuff must have been filthy! My sister’s case was touch-and-go for months, with a half-dozen courses of antibiotics. She went to a well-known eye specialist in So Cal and he was able to save both eyes, with only one going blind. I believe some sort of class-action suit is underway.
I am so sorry. It’s just awful. All because of greed.
