Terradot, a carbon removal company, is using “enhanced rock weathering” to sequester carbon by spreading crushed volcanic rock over farmland.
STATE OF SÃO PAULO, Brazil — Across vast stretches of farmland in southern Brazil, researchers at a carbon removal company are attempting to accelerate a natural process that normally unfolds over thousands or millions of years.
The company, Terradot, is spreading tons of volcanic rock crushed into a fine dust over land where soybeans, sugar cane and other crops are grown. As rain percolates through the soil, chemical reactions pull carbon from the air and convert it into bicarbonate ions that eventually wash into the ocean, where the carbon remains stored.
The technique, known as “enhanced rock weathering,” is emerging as a promising approach to lock away carbon on a massive scale. Some researchers estimate the method has the potential to sequester billions of tons of carbon, helping slow global climate trends. Other major projects are underway across the globe and have collectively raised over a quarter-billion dollars.
As governments around the world fall woefully short of their emissions reduction targets, there is a growing consensus that large-scale carbon removal will be necessary to avoid some of the worst effects of climate change. An analysis conducted by an international team of researchers estimated that the world may need to remove up to 10 gigatons of carbon dioxide a year by 2050 to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius — an amount greater than the annual greenhouse gas emissions of the United States.
Shawn Benner, a hydrogeologist and geochemist who left Boise State University after more than two decades to join Terradot, said he made the decision by asking himself what his grandchildren would want him to do. “Not too many people have the opportunity to change the temperature of the...”

Then what?
Make the Sun Small Again
Instead of recycling paper, send it straight to landfills.
Paper is not made out of old growth forests. It is made from trees planted as a crop, like wheat or cotton, but to make lumber and paper. If you recycle it, less new paper is made, so less trees are planted. If you send it straight to a landfill, all of the carbon in the paper is removed from the atmosphere and new trees are planted, removing more carbon from the atmosphere.
SOOOOOOO-_WHAT ILL THEY GROW WITH ALL THAT CARBON ON THE OCEAN FLOOR?
Hucksters
how much carbon was released by the energy used to mine, crush, transport and spread said volcanic rock? ... If MORE than that which would supposedly be “sequestered”, then yet ANOTHER loser carbon “capture technology” ...
Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have been much higher than today's levels, with no adverse effects.
But don't let facts interfere with your global warming wet dreams.
But still a mere pittance compared to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of international climate researchers.
That was on my list of things not to worry about when I was a teen. Same with the impending collision of our Milky Way galaxy with the Andromeda galaxy. I’m sure there are many many other things I’m not even aware of that would be on that list too.
Gee, what could go wrong?
Just stick to spraying the skies to block out the sun while you push solar energy, ya retards.
I think they are serious and increasingly, CO2 removal from the atmosphere becomes closer to reality. The goal here is poulation reduction and worldwide crop failure due to reduced CO2 is one way to accomplish that. With Bill Gates and other zillionaire techies convincing themselves they can attain immortality by copying their nervous systems into the Great Machine the rest of the world’s population becomes superfluous to them.
You were NOT supposed to notice that and ask pertinent questions as above.
Follow the "custody" of these credits as people attempt to "trade" them and watch the devaluation.
Did you know there is an IRS form allowing some of this to be applied against taxes owed? In other words, once again....
“Why not just sow the soil with salt?”
No ground up basalt rock is not salt it’s primarily, iron, magnesium, and calcium silicates it’s not NaCl or any other of the chlorides. Basalt is known as a basic rock because its overall PH in slightly basic.
CO2 plus rain = carbonic acid which when it comes in contact with fine ground basalt dissolves the silicate bond and forms metal ion bicarbonates of Fe,Mg Ca as the main ones plus smaller amounts of K, Na, Al all in +HCO3 bicarbonate form K, Mg and Fe are plant nutrients this would actually fertilize the soils. There are places that use rock powder already as a fertilizer. One only has to look at how green and fertile the soils are in Hawaii where it gets rainfall to see how well basalt weather’s to fertile soil components.
This would actually help turn non arable land into fertile soils some organic carbon is needed to kick off the formation of humus this could be biochar from the pyrolysis of waste biomass such as corn stalks or sugar cane stalk or sawdust anything that grew can be heated in a sealed container and reduced to active carbon biochar. The rich black soils that are 1000s of years old were made by man who burnt trees in great piles where the centers of those piles were turned to biochar then spread out over the now clear field it drastically increases fertility and the effect last thousands of years that much is crystal clear. Carbon dating is spot on for active carbon C14 is only formed via cosmic rays in the biosphere until humans mastered nuclear fission and we can now create it with nuclear graphite in RBMK type reactors or AGR types.
This simply accelerates the natural process of hard rock weathering while improving soil quality, so no real harm can come from it. All the carbon man put up eventually was coming down into the oceans as bicarb over geological time anyways, via hard rock weathering and direct ocean surface absorption into the ocean water bicarbonate system all of it will eventually precipitate out or be bioccumulated as shells ,reefs, or limestone. Don’t get all worked up it’s not a planet dooming qtard conspiracy it will take 500+ years to pull down what human have put up in excess of what natural is part of the carbon cycle. It’s not how much rock you can grind is how much wet land do you have to spread it over and even ground to micron sized particles the kinetics of 440ppm to rain to bicarbonate is not all that fast. Sleep easy the warm embrace of the anthropocene will cradle our species for at least a century.
Zero chance this will do anything except separate fools from their $
