The notification pinged on smartphones across America on Friday, September 19, night. US President Donald Trump had signed a proclamation that would add a staggering $100,000 fee to H1B visa applications, sending shockwaves through the Indian Diaspora that forms the backbone of America's tech industry.
For Priya and her husband Rajesh (names changed on request), the news arrived like a digital earthquake in their quiet suburban home.
She, on an H4 dependent visa, watched helplessly as her husband -- an H1B holder with three years remaining on his current visa -- absorbed the implications of what seemed like a career-ending decree.
"I was not really impacted by it initially," Priya recalls, her voice still carrying traces of that night's uncertainty. "It would be my husband who would be affected."
But as the hours stretched into a sleepless dawn, the reality of their precarious situation began to crystallise.
The 24-Hour Nightmare
The new $100,000 fee only applies to new visas, not renewals or current visa holders, but this clarification wouldn't come until Saturday evening -- leaving hundreds of thousands of families suspended in immigration limbo for nearly 24 agonising hours.
Rajesh's initial reaction was measured but telling. "He was pretty straightforward that Trump was going to charge $100,000 for the petition," Priya remembers. "But he didn't provide any official documents when he announced it. So I was waiting for more information."
That wait would prove torturous. Videos began circulating on social media of panicked H1B holders rushing to airports, abandoning flights mid-boarding, convinced they might never be allowed back into the country that had become their home.
"People actually got into flights and then immediately vacated, thinking they won't be able to come back and their life was going to be affected," Priya recounts, her voice reflecting the collective fear

Indians or Injuns?
What does this have to do with the price of eggs?
That’s just a bonus.
Trump supports American workers.

Oh. They had nearly 24 hours of agony, but they found out it won’t apply to them.
Reminds me of some sage words - most things we worry about never happen anyway.
Rajesh stole an American’s job.
Definitely. Might even be my son in law. He’s still looking for a new full time job. He’s only getting gig work right now.
“What does this have to do with the price of eggs?”
There are estimates that there are as many as 50 million foreigners here. That is one in six people you see out there don’t belong here. Send them home, the price of homes drops, the price of eggs drops, and salaries for Americans increase.
Plus Britain conquered India by building an extensive ground surveillance operation made up of scumbag Indians willing to sell out their countrymen to the Brits. That intel surveillance network never really died, and was maintained and even grown generation to generation.
Today you see so many Indian migrants because CIA and Western intel are bringing them here to run them as ground surveillance in the American Stasi I detail in the site in my tag.
Just like CIA bringing their ground surveillance here after we pulled out of Mogadishu, and using Catholic missionary orgs they formed as covers for overseas ops to do it. Now Maine and Minnesota are all screwed up. Ilhan Omar’s family were CIA assets in the government over there, and after planting all their controlled Somalis in one place, they used them to plant an asset in Congress. These are deep waters.
The US Intel community has morphed into the biggest enemy we face, and they are acting like that with the domestic surveillance, and all the foreigners they are importing.
They all need to go home.
Good luck to your son in law on his job search. Tough times with all the damn Indians and their H1B slave masters ruining things for American workers.
It’s nothing personal, just America for Americans..
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Since you don’t seem to care about the future of America why not STFU?
When I got laid of and replaced by Asians my pain lasted months snd I almost lost everything.
Anything to vilify Trump.
If you’re not a citizen, leave.
And anyone who comes over here should NOT in any way, shape, or form, be allowed to drag their entire extended family over with them.
THAT needs to stop and now. Anyone who wants to come over can go through the proper channels and application process.
And add back the requirements that my grandparents needed to meet coming in through Ellis Island. A sponsor a place to stay, a job lined up by the sponsor, be healthy, be of good moral character and NO CRIMMINALS ALLOWED.
Exactly. Americans need those jobs, too.
We need to end all the Teddy Kennedy immagration crap.
The Lion of the Senate pulled all of the Heart Strings he could find to flood this nation with all of the Third World refuse in ever increasing numbers.
The family chain migration scheme was designed to bypass the national quota limitations on immigration. Once one member of a family was granted citizenship he could bring his entire family into the country regardless of quotas.
We as a rich nation can't break up families. That would be cruel.
Sorry matey. If you want to stay with your family, stay in your country.
The Indian anchor baby infestation is proof that the birthright citizenship scam needs to be stopped.
