Dead skunk disappears
Self ^ | 10/6/25 | Hot Tabasco

Yesterday evening I killed a skunk in my backyard and left it to be picked up this morning. I set my trail camera out because when I killed a skunk previously, it was gone by morning and I was hoping it would happen again.

Sure enough, it was gone but no photos on the camera. There was a brief blur but nothing else.

This is a mystery to me and the only thing I can think of is that an owl might have swooped in and snatched it up.

Any thoughts? I know the camera was working because later last night it captured my neighbor letting out her dog.

Likely the owl swooping in to get a free meal. Although you would think nothing would eat a skunk. 😣

About 25 years ago, my wife and I were traveling down some back road on the way back from a favorite ice cream shop, and I hit a skunk. I had the AC on high, and it sucked all of the smell into the passenger compartment. Obviously, we opened the windows, and my wife nearly puked. It took about two months to get rid of that smell, and I used every chemical known to mankind to get rid of it. I passed by that dead skunk every day for several weeks on the way back-and-forth to work, and let me tell you that dead skunks definitely smell a lot worse than the smell they emit when they were alive… if that’s possible to even imagine.

As a funny aside, my wife (of maybe 2 months at the time) and I had an argument about who was going to be able to shower first when we got home, but when we finally pulled up to our apartment, she refused to get out of the car because she thought that the skunk was somehow still alive and clinging to the tire. I told her that there was no way that it was still alive when it had been hit by a 3500 pound vehicle going about 60 miles an hour, let alone sitting there waiting to attack her. I also told her that she didn’t get out right away, I was going to leave her there and go shower. Needless to say, she got out of the car immediately. Also funny was the fact that she had grown up in a city, and probably only saw skunks on TV. The complaints that she made to her mother were side splitting. I still give her shit about that.

Put up a big own box for horned owls, you won’t have skunks again.

Had a friend do that. They need to obtain purchase with their back legs on the ground to get the leverage they need to spray.

But you have to be really really fast

Many animals kill and eat their species...chipmunks for example.

Yes. Alvin.

I have always understood that if the trap is small enough that they cannot get their tail up they cannot spray.

Now, I live trap the raccoons, possums, skunks, whatever. And take them downtown Cincinnati to the tent cities they set up.

.....

Why?

Before I posted that, I wondered what AI would say about it.... it said it was a myth and that it would still be able to spray.

I remember the skunk squirming around a bit as my Dad had it lifted up by the tail but not near as bad as a cat if you tried to do that.

I’d do the same thing and drop them off in downtown Detroit!

I used to do that to the possums and raccoons that I would catch. Drop them off about a block away from my plant on Connor and Charlevoix.

Get rid of the grubs and the skunks won’t bother your lawn.

Treated the lawns and the grubs are gone. The skunks are foraging under my bird feeder.

Actually, it's a good thing because that's where I can shoot them after dark with my .22 pellet rifle with attached flashlight.

If the people setting up these protest sites, protesting homelessness but do it by blocking sidewalks and defecating in the streets, they deserve to see what deal world people put up with.

I’m tired of these protests. There are plenty of places to set up a tent and live your life without impacting others with their crapping and junking up an otherwise great city.

Another one where he’s crossing a dangerous crevasse out in the middle of nowhere and its a couple hundred feet from a highway.

Most skunk traps I’ve seen are cylindrical in nature to keep them from being able to raise their tails and spray.
