Surrounded by lush forest and built around a historic ship port, Prince Rupert could easily be the picture on a postcard.
But this Canadian coastal town is now so dangerous Walmart has closed its local supermarket due to fears for staff safety.
The only Walmart within a 144km radius, the budget supermarket is a lifeline for many of the low-income residents in the town, and will be a huge loss for families.
Nestled between the Great Bear Rainforest and the Skeena River, the town of 12,000 has become an unlikely breeding ground for crime, drugs and homelessness.
Local business owners have said the once-peaceful area is now plagued by constant shoplifting and vandalism which often escalates into violence.
Shocking figures show that Prince Rupert's crime index is more than double the provincial average, and more than 3.5 times higher than the national average.
The exact figures for number of crimes for that year are not given, but figures from 2020 show the area recorded 14,977 crimes per 100,000 people in 2020.
This compares with a provincial average of 6,040 for British Columbia, and 4,233 for Canada as a whole.

The LA —> SF —> Portland —> Seattle —> Canada northward liberal crime culture continues its march.
i heard the citizens of Prince Rupert are begging President Trump to send in USA national guard troops ... [joke]
The reason? Liberals. They almost encourage lawlessness.
oh MY!
What is crime like in Ketchikan?
So, what's the real issue? The perpetrators of constant shoplifting and vandalism, strong-arm assaults, and drug use are easily identified,
even in a backwater town like Prince Rupert.
Conclusion? A soft on crime approach is leading to the economic and societal collapse of this rustic community.
Sounds like time for the good citizens of Prince Rupert to take out the trash.
This is pure speculation but perhaps the Indians (indigenous folk) there are doing much of the crime and drinking.

Yes, fishing is a major industry in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The city’s history and economy have long been closely linked to commercial fishing, seafood processing, and port activities. The port of Prince Rupert is a regional hub for fisheries—especially salmon, halibut, and other coastal species—and many residents are either directly or indirectly employed in fishing, fish processing, or related support services.
While the industry has faced challenges and fluctuating levels of activity due to environmental, regulatory, and economic factors in recent years, it remains a significant part of the community’s economy and local culture.
Prince Rupert is a major Container port, particularly for Asian products going east to Toronto
I imagine there is some connection to Asian triads and Mexican cartels who have set up in British Columbia
Not that long ago, Prince Rupert was being talked up as the site of a big new port for transloading containers from ships to railcars. The bloom is apparently off the rose, if bloom there ever was.
Sikh gangs are big in the Vancouver BC crime scene. They are in drug distribution. And you are correct about Chinese Triads>>>>
"BC’s crime landscape include: East Asian organized crime: Groups with links to Chinese triads or other East Asian networks have been involved in drug trafficking, money laundering, and human smuggling."
Especially in a backwater town like Prince Rupert!
Regards,
When I was in Victoria I asked a local if the sea planes in the harbor were supplying fishing supplies to the industry in coastal towns.
He told me no, the main industry in those towns was drugs.
I really don’t think Indians are the issue. The problem is leftism that affects all races across the board. In particular the leftists that run the place that do not want to lock up, try in court and put into prison criminals of all races.
The left coast is not a geographical term, it’s a serious political term. IMO it’s a disease that spread from New England To California and then up the coast line. Even the central provinces of Canada know their east and west coasts are politically diseased.
those big boys aren’t picking the shelves at Walmart , though, are they?
We can be sure the city is run by lefties.
Reminds me of San Francisco where entire aisles in Target and Safeway are behind locked acrylic barriers, making it truly inconvenient for shoppers. I had to wait for someone in Target to unlock an acrylic barrier so I could look at a $12 watch band.
Far easier to order off of Amazon.
Yes, I know this is Canada, but it's the same phenomena as in the US. After three generations of LBJs Great Society we have multiple generations of fatherless feral people with no skills, an appetite for any and all drugs, and no pride in them selves. Is it any wonder communities turn into sewers.
Shirt heads will keep breaking the law until it becomes too uncomfortable for them.
