Other than cannon balls that pierced the hull below the water line, the greatest danger from cannon balls did not come from them actually piercing the hull.

The real danger was from wood splinters that spawled off the inside of the hull. If they didn't kill a sailor outright, there was a serious risk of death from infection. Gangrene other than on an extremity which could be amputated was uniformly fatal.

The same effect was seen in the use of Palmetto logs to build Ft Moultrie at the entrance to Charleston harbor. The fort was attacked during the Battle of Sullivan's Island, 28 June 1776.
