Russia has said it believes NATO is plotting a "landing" in Ukraine as part of a bid by the European Union to "occupy" Moldova.
The Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) claimed NATO military units were massing in Romania close to the Moldovan border and were also planning a "landing" in Ukraine's Odesa region, according to TASS, Moscow's state news agency.
Why It Matters
Moldova goes to the polls on Sunday in a critical parliamentary election. The vote is seen as a stark choice for the country between a path to EU membership or closer ties with Moscow.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moldova applied to join the EU. It was given candidate status later that year and, in 2024, the EU agreed to open accession negotiations, further increasing tensions with Russia.
What to Know
The Russian intelligence report said that the EU was "determined to keep Moldova within the framework of their Russophobic policies."
"This is planned to be done at any cost, including the deployment of troops and the de facto occupation of the country. At this stage, NATO military units are concentrating in Romania near the Moldovan border," the report stated.
"A NATO 'landing' is being prepared in Ukraine's Odesa region to intimidate Transnistria. According to available information, the first group of career military personnel from France and Great Britain has already arrived."
Moldova Detains Dozens over Alleged Russia-Backed Unrest Plot
Moldovan authorities carried out 250 raids and over 70 people Monday as part of an investigation into an alleged Russia-backed plan to incite unrest ahead of the election.
Moldova’s police force said the plan to incite "mass riots" was "coordinated from the Russian Federation, through criminal elements."

Not our monkeys, not our circus.
So says the Kremlin as it plots occupation of Moldova.
The allegations by the Kremlin are to make an advanced excuse for its own planned actions.
Possible-
If Odessa falls, it would be a disaster for Ukraine, land-locking the place. It’s also a major port and economic center for Ukraine.
The Russians have several objectives regards Ukraine: 1) block NATO admission 2) seize Russian ethnic areas 3) make it a punitive campaign where Ukraine understands there’s a cost in doing what they did.
IMHO: I expected Odessa to fall earlier but I think the Russians are casualty adverse. They are playing a game for a long haul and not just bum rushing things like in the early stages of this conflict.
The Euro West produced were played by the Biden US State Department & MIL Complex, produced Zelensky, as easily as we were played by Phizer & COMPANY over the Covid vaccine that wasn’t.
RUSSIA phobia. Seeking regime change in both Russia & UKR. Now they’re all, literally broke and out of fuel, after Nuland’s cookie run for prez shopping in UKR.
When broke, go to war.
President Eisenhower warned us of the MIL complex. He knew how it worked. We’re not even suspicious, thanks to Westernn media blackout on Russia peace efforts made, and betrayed.
Same contradictory bullshit narrative as always - Russia is weak, its economy is collapsing, its war-machine is stuck in Ukraine, Yet you must fear Russia - it will invade NATO countries, its intruding on the airspace of Estonia, Finland, Poland and even France.
Now Moldova is the next front.
You people and your EU-Davos propaganda never stop.
Dear FRiends, Our FReepathon is our next concern. We still need to raise approximately $13k before the end of the month to meet our goal! And I think we’re gonna need a little prayer here. Thank you very much and God bless you.

It would be nice if Moldova and the EU would let the Moldovan diaspora in Russia vote in the “election”. But of course, only the Moldovan diaspora in the EU gets to vote.
"You can contribute any combination of monthly and/or one-time contributions to reach this goal."
And we’re not meddling?
Do you actually believe that?
Everyone is accusing the other of meddling while they meddle.
Everyone calls the other persons Information Operations “propaganda,” but is doing the same things.
The EU, US, are surely, as in 100% for sure meddling also on the side of our interests, where we have our chosen candidate we want to win.
But then we use pejoratives and play the outrage and how were “shocked” that the Russians are doing this too, probably at a far lower level/scale than we are since they don’t have the capabilities, money and access we have to Moldova.
I bet you can get all sorts of “free” radio, movies, and other crap in Moldova right now, of course sprinkled in with constant IO messages.
https://about.rferl.org/service/moldovan-service/. If the Russians do this, it’s undue meddling and “propaganda,” and of course the pro EU candidate in a neck to neck race is appealing to this Russian interference argument...
It’s a case of the pot calling the kennel black, but since our MSM is part of our government operations to a large degree, you can’t expect any sort of true investigative, or critical thinking, or objective reporting from our side.
I’m suprised they haven’t done mass arrests yet against those evil Russians interfering, all while Radio Free Europe blasts over the airwaves, EU and US tax dollars are going to our candidate, state paid for EU TV stations usually UK, German and French (much of the media in the EU is public) are blasting their messages...
Ever notice it’s never called “propaganda” when it’s us?
Come on Vlad. You know how bad the Russian military is. Now imagine European militaries being 10 times worse. They wouldn’t stand a chance against the paper bear.
What is Transnistria?
Transnistria, Latin for “beyond the Dniester River,” has a population size of around 400,000 and has been controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 1992, though it remains part of Moldova.
Some 1,500 Russian “peacekeeping” troops are still stationed there, as well as a major Russian weapons storage facility, the Cobasna ammunition depot.
Many Transnistrians hold more than one passport, with an estimated 350,000 having Moldovan citizenship, according to Chișinău; more than 200,000 have Russian citizenship, according to Moscow; 100,000 have Ukrainian citizenship.
There is no moral equivalency between Russia/NKorea/Iran/Venezuela/Cuba/ Palestinian terrorists like Hamas...and the US and it’s allies, Finland,Poland, etc.
Russia is aligned North Korea, and has brought that enslaved, impoverished nation into the Ukraine War where it has no business at all.
If Russia was in any way redeemable, it would have liberated North Korea years ago.
It would have stopped welcoming Hamas and other terrorist groups - like BLM - to Moscow.
But it instead embraces the most evil regime on earth and supports it against its poor enslaved, terrified people.
But Russia doesn’t liberate anyone. It is more like an infectious disease than a country.
Same goes with Iran, Cuba and the narcostate Venezuela, where there haven’t been free elections in decades.
I’ve long thought that Moldova should recognize the Dniester River as its border with Ukraine and cede to Ukraine the East side of the river. Moldova could then apply for NATO membership, and Ukraine could deal with the Russian speakers in Transnistria.
Sure-
Noriega was on our payroll.
Pinochet we put in power.
AQ we backed in the Cold War.
Saddam we armed and backed when he was fighting Iran, and he was no better in 1984 when we sent our old stockpile of nerve agent his way to use on Iran than in 2003 when we used the WMD argument to dispose of him. BTW, where were the WMD we used as a justification to invade 2003?
Do you realize in Syria, we were arming ISIS type groups and that was AFTER 9-11, because they were fighting the Assad regime?
But no “moral equivalent,” haven’t heard that before. (Sarc)
Three ideas you should familiarize yourself with that drive all this:
1. The enemy of your enemy is your friend.
2. Nations have no friends, only interests.
3. One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.
The US is willing to make deals with the lowest of the low and in fact some of the nations on our side like Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Jordan, are everything we claim to be wrong with nations we invade and hardly any more open or free than the nations you list as bad guys. They hack people apart, throw homos from roof tops, aren’t democratic, oppress other religions, women...
In the end it’s just about polemics, rhetoric, and some fallacies with a huge number of people wanting to pretend they are better than the other side, when in reality we do EVERYTHING they do.
We censor, torture (enhanced interrogation), propagandize our own people, kidnap (extraordinary rendition), assassinate even our own people without a trial abroad, massively rely on mercenaries to do our handy work... But sure, we’re “different.”
Let me guess, God is also on our side?
Here’s the worst part. I don’t even disagree with much that we do. I realize my bread is buttered on this side. Maybe that makes me an even worse lowlife, because I know we’re immoral and it’s all just interest/money driven, but because I benefit from it, I accept it.
I just don’t pretend that we shoot freedom missiles or drop democracy bombs on people.
You tell me:
Is Iraq better off today?
How about Libya?
Syria?
I already know your retort, since you can’t argue the facts: I’m unAmerican, it’s all leftist or Russian propaganda. Here’s where it gets funny, our torturing, kidnapping and assassinations aren’t as bad as the Russians. (LOL)
Give him chem weapons and the manufacturing capabilities: https://static.independent.co.uk/s3fs-public/thumbnails/image/2018/05/10/13/rumsfeld-hussein.jpg?quality=75&width=1250&crop=3%3A2%2Csmart&auto=webp
Then in 2003 invade him because he’s bad and has chem weapons.
But but, it’s all different when we do it:
https://www.yahoo.com/news/report-cia-considered-kidnapping-killing-160909802.html
Snowden was also on the kill list, but for a very abridged / incomplete list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_assassinations_by_the_United_States
Because when we kidnap and assassinate people, hold them indefinitely in detention without any notification or trial, torture people, it’s for our legitimate national security and that’s always justified!
Do not pretend like we don’t do these things: https://www.spiegel.de/politik/deutschland/cia-entfuehrungsopfer-khaled-el-masri-ein-irreparabel-beschaedigtes-leben-a-dab1d996-e8d4-4ed4-951d-cf3ec5840cad. We kidnapped his ass, torturing the crap out of him for MONTHS, and when we figured out it was a case of us snatching the wrong guy (mistaken identity), we debated killing him to burry the problem. You see, if we had killed him, he wouldn’t be saying these things about us, right?
You want to know how “different” we are? We actually were using Romanian Intel guys from the Ceaușescu regime to do some of the torturing/interrogations in 2003 - 2005!!! As in, same people!!! Hahaha
And then you want to somehow pretend like there is some difference:
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/dec/14/romania-cia-black-prisons-ioan-talpes
You pretend either that it’s somehow different or not true, or that it is justified because of the gravity/severity of the situation.
While all that is unprincipled and relativistic, one thing remains a fact, we do all the same things.
You don’t think in Russia sits some guy saying the same exact things you are but about us?
Post Cold War and especially after 9-11, the US became something that very much so resembles what we once claimed to stand against.
—Post Cold War our policy makers quickly learned they can use our unparalleled military and economic might to force others to do what we want with near impunity.
—Post 9-11 the security apparatus had all restraints removed. Behaviors which would have gotten someone 20 years in Leavenworth in 1968 earned you a GWOT medal in 2005. From the Patriot Act and complete erosion of privacy rights to the DoD and a handful of IC folks empowering themselves to play judge and jury over American lives abroad they see as folks deserving to be targeted, the rules changed.
No, there is zero difference.
The differences are merely games with words, where you try to find some angle where you can pretend like there is some difference.
Since the mid 1990s the US has gone in a very bad direction.
—> Russia is aligned North Korea, and has brought that enslaved, impoverished nation into the Ukraine War where it has no business at all.
And did you expect cutting Russia off from relations with the west, trade, SWIFT, etc would isolate them?
No, sadly the west forced them to seek alliances with other pariah states.
Cause/effect.
Great post, but of course zeepers are fact-deaf and simply hold emotionally-based opinions at best.
